Testing engine.

I got a lot of good info from the FAQ section on starting an old unused motor. The 78' 115 Johnson I have seems in real clean shape with very few hours on it. My question is can I set it up and run it with one of the water connections on the lower unit or should it be in the lake to do all this. It will be a problem to move it to the lake for this job.

Re: Testing engine.

Are you talking about muffs? If so then I am sure you can run it on muffs in its present location, but no reving, I think you can only go to 1500-2000 rpm or something like that with muffs.

Yes...muffs lol..sorry I couldn't think of the name for them. Thanks for the quick reply I'm sure there will be more questions as I get into this project.

Running on muffs doesn't test anything except that the motor will run. Do a compression test, do a "real" spark test, not just seeing if the sparkplugs are getting fire. And any motor I was going to buy, if it passed the above tests, would get a thorough carb teardown and cleaning and a new water pump.

Yes Walker I agree with you, but all I got from his post was if he could run it out of water...

Yes Walker I am going to perform all of the above, but I was worried about running on just the muffs for a few minutes until I can change the pump impeller. The next step will be to locate and buy a service manual. I appreciate the responses.

You can run it on the muffs untill it runs out of fuel without harm if it is being cooled properly.
