I recently took a 1992 Maxum (Mercruiser Alpha1 4.3L) out for a test run before purchasing the boat. The owner started the engine after much trouble and it mad a God-Aweful screaching noise after he finally got it started. It almost sounded as if there was metal on metal grinding. The engine ran rough to say the least, but the screaching stopped when he would increase the RPM's.

I was hoping someone out there could share some insight into what that noise could have been? ie: bad belt, although they seemed tight. The owner explained the boat ran rough the first time out after winterizing but could not explain the screaching noise??

I have not bought it yet and won't till it's checked out. I don't want to get snowed if there is something really wrong here.

Could be a lot of problems-drive, starter bendix not releasing, etc
run.
