Good bye Windows 7, I am going to run Linux!!! GRRRRRRR!!!!

I don't upgrade operating systems until I have too.
That takes about 4+ years!

By then..the new operating system is more stable!

Ubuntu is my recommended Linux package. I like a windows system for day to day use but it's nice to have a Linux system around for the things windows tries to prevent you from doing like copying my kids dvd's that I know they are going to scratch.

I'm getting a notebook with Win7 for Xmas.

I have used 7 on a couple of different computers and loved it, but on this particular laptop, can't get the video driver to work right, keeps crashing the computer, so this is perhaps one that just can't do it, which amazes me, it is a souped up laptop, 4 gigs of memory, 500 gig harddrive and a dual core 64 bit processor, wide screen, I mean this is a great computer, but Vista had this problem on it and I upgraded to 64 bit window 7 and it has the same problem, after many long conversations with AMD, Microsoft and ATI this week, I give up! It's either that or play frisbee with the dang thing!

So far so good with Windows 7. It's far more stable than Vista ever was. We're going to be doing between 10-20 thousand machines in the next year and are testing with our companys applications to make sure they are compatible.

The biggest issue is using old applications that are not on Windows 7 application compatibility list or using old device drivers or legacy peripherals.

I ran various forms of Linux at home for a MythTV PVR box and it ran great for what it did. As long as someone writes a linux driver for your new blu ray player, or printer then you are fine. Not everything will run on Linux either.

If you are part of a compaan get a Microsoft Technet subscription that will give you licenses for all kinds of installs (testing) and two free support calls that may look after your issue...or give Ubuntu a whirl.

What make and model laptop is it. Maybe I can find the driver for you on the manufacturer website.

64 bit Windows does have issues if the hardware does not support the 64 bit architecture.

Was the os installation a clean slate format and reinstall or did it let you go over top the old install.

Lots of times on a clean slate install Windows will install but with base drivers from Windows. If you want it to run properly you have to go download the driver set for Windows 7 off of the manufacturers website for the laptop for the motherboard, video, sound, etc.

I jst fixed my desktop pc at work and my sons pc the same way last week. Windows 7 itself would not pickup the newest driver for the video and wasn't resfreshing properly or going to the right resolution.

I actually like the windows 7 system quite well, but it is very frustrating to have to back down the video driver to the generic windows drive and not take advantage of the feature the video card offer, it is a bug that has been prevalent for quite a while now and there are several thousands of hits when you do a google search for it..and none of the companies involved seem to be able to figure out a solution...very frustrating to say the least..

Now if anyone here wants to take a look or has run into this problem and has a solution, I am more than happy to try it!

If you want to see what I am going through, just do a search for atikmdag.sys

I am open to any idea I can come up with...

Re: Thats it!!!! I am fed up...

We skipped right over Windows ME for the same reason to XP and skipped over Vista to 7.

It's seems that the second generation of each os is ok. They need to practise it seems. :)

Duh, a manic depressive on crack is more stable than Vista.

Re: Thats it!!!! I am fed up...

This was a clean install of 7 ultimate, I have an RTM disc that I can install any of the 23 versions of 7, my disc is pre-activated, the memory is 4 gig, 64 bit AMD Turon TL-50 processor and an ATI Radeon 1200 video card, the computer is an acer aspire 5516, but as I said, I upgraded the processor and memory.

It is so frustrating due to the fact I have been doing this type of stuff for over 25 years now and have never run into a problem of this nature that a manufacture does not have a solution!!! And in doing a heck of a lot of reading over the last couple of weeks, it is a problem that has been occurring not only with the ATI cards, but Nvidia as well, it is a kernal mode Blue screen and shuts the computer down

Re: Thats it!!!! I am fed up...

I am on a XP laptop right now, and this thing is bullet proof, have never had a problem with it at all...but it is getting old, and overheats at times, Dad gave me this brand new laptop a few months ago and with the overheating problems I am having on this one, I figured it was time to change things out, but it just ain't working out that way!

But I will add, my wife has been running gateway laptop for about 3 years now with Vista and has never had a problem, she loves it, she picks up the broom if I even come close to it!

Re: Thats it!!!! I am fed up...

You are definately not dealing with a run of the mill problem dude. I just looked i up for you.

That is a hardware compatibility issue that will need to dealt with an updated driver from ATI or a workaround that someone on the MS or ATI forums come up with.

Here's what I found on the Microsoft site as a lot of solutions out there will be from hacks or jibberish.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/47b2a155-8dca-4308-b49f-2beae7330ab6

I'll keep looking for you.

I run two OS on separate hard drives, Ubuntu & Vista. I use the Linux (Ubuntu) OS most of the time and switch to Vista for 'windows only' software like AUTO-CAD and industrial control program-ware. The Ubuntu menu system is more streamlined than windows. The security issues are a bit safer with linux.
The best part of all is it is free and the updates for bugs come a lot sooner for linux than they do for windows. With linux you can access all your window files but not vice-a-versa.

Well the Linux Ubuntu didn't work either, so we are going to play frisbee with this particular computer and pick up another one..

I'll play frisbee with you, toss it this way!!!

Seriously, can you get a different video card for a laptop?? I've done tons of desktops but never torn into a laptop.

I intentionally payed extra on the laptop I am using right now for a dedicated graphics card (Dell Vostro). In hindsight it was a complete waste as I don't play games or do CAD on it. I could have just spent that $$ on an extra couple of gig's of ram to make up for the "shared" video memory the on board video uses.

Also, Unless the card is old or quickly phased out I can't imagine that there won't be a patch in the future.

Pure speculation warning: I bet the problem is a combination of the ATI card and the AMD chip. I've seen similar issues in the past where the video card is fine with an Intel chip. Specifically I built a friends sister a computer from scratch and was made to look like a fool for 2 weeks because I had no idea that a bios upgrade was required to make the ATI card work with her AMD motherboard. That's when I stopped building my own computers, it's sooo hard to keep up with the quirks of the computer industry (as you are finding out)!!

Before you toss it out, let me chime in. I have a Dell e6400 laptop running W7 and have the video driver crashing problem as well.

However, I believe that I've figured out that it is ME causing the problem! I'm a touch typist and can crank out the words quickly. When I'm typing on the laptop, I've discovered that sometimes my thumb bases are touching and dragging across the laptop touchpad at the same time that I'm hitting keys while typing. That results in the driver getting conflicting input from two sources simultaneously, which causes the crash.

Whenever I type while using an external keyboard with this laptop, I don't have the crashing problem. I'm thinkin' of getting a wireless keyboard and mouse, then plugging the laptop into my 42" LCD flat screen to use as a monitor while sitting in my easy chair! :D

I put Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my Acer Aspire One netbook. LOVE IT!!! Boots up super quick and it is generally faster all around. When that thing had XP on it, it seemed like it was always "churning". I was always like "what the heck are you DOING???"

Yep, I like the speedy boot-up and overall speed when multi-tasking. Unlike Vista I have NEVER had to resort to "alt-ctrl-delete"!
