I've timed my laptop from cold shutdown startup to fully working at just 42 seconds using W7. I like it.

Well, golly gee, I didn't realize that it was a contest! LMAO!!!

I just posted my time because compared to my old desktop taking 5 or more minutes to boot, the new W7 system is worlds better. My GF has XP home edition on her machine and it takes at least 10 minutes to come up.

dolluper,

If you are addressing me, it is actually an Acer, my 5th and I have never had a problem with overheating in the Acer laptops, I stopped buying Dells for the reasons you outlined..

If you are concerned with overheating a common problem is that the heatsink gets clogged with so much dust it becomes a solid block to prevent air from getting past.

The true fix is to disassemble it and pull the dirt off like a flannel blanket. If you just want to check it I have blown air backwards through the vents when it was off and got some dirt to break loose and make a difference.

Re: Thats it!!!! I am fed up...

Thanks, but this is a brand new computer and I had it apart on Sunday night to upgrade the CPU and put all new thermal paste, double checked the cooling system, which is clean as a whistle , nope after more research today, this is definatly a chipset/video card problem, so I am going to have to go to a new game plane which is using my long lost skill to start a kernel debugging routine to see exactly what is causing the BSD error, It will take some time, but if I find and fix it, you can be assured AMD/ATI is going to be hearing from my lawyer!

These jerks...

For some reason I've always been a little leary of AMD's in laptops. I think this is why :p Sorry about your luck MT. I have a new Dell with a Core3 and Win7. It's not without its quirks but overall we're pretty happy with it.

Re: Thats it!!!! I am fed up...

Just thought I would update on this thread in case it comes up for someone else, today, I was actually able to get this stupid problem fixed!! I am amazed what it took to do it! I downloaded a BIOS flash which was one version older and flashed the BIOS with the older version and the darn thing has been working all day with no problems at all!

These computer companies are amazing, it is stupid to have to step one version backwards to get the newer software OS systems to work, but at least I don't have to play frisbee with the darn thing now. I really wish, I could bill them for the hours I put in on this, I would be on the Forbes top 500 list now!

Aint it the truth! I've been running Win7 for about one month and I hate hate hate it. XP was so much nicer. So, Ubuntu/Linux for me.

Seriously, why does the user have to perform hours upon hours of work to make an off the shelf PC or laptop work as advertised? You'd think by this day and age we could...ah, never mind.

On laptops that are a couple of years old or more and have overheating problems the first thing I look for is a buildup of dust on the heat sink. What I tyipcally find is that the dust builds up on the heatsink so thick that the air cannot go through it. It is like cleaning off the lint filter on a dryer. Removing it makes a world of difference. If you can take the computer apart and clean it out it should make a big difference.

If you do not know how to disassemble your laptop there are a lot of manuals and videos available on the internet that will show you how.

I've been running VISTA on a COMPAQ A921NR laptop for three years without any complaints at all . I have run XP PRO on six desktops and never had a never had to wait over three minutes to boot up unless the hard drive was full .

My wife loves Vista on her gateway, I have never liked it. But to this day, my favorite is still XP Pro SP3

There was a perfect OS, in the old days, and it was called DOS, I used to love working in DOS, there was nothing I couldn't do, unfortunately everybody decided they needed a graphic interface.....Thanks Jobs!

XT, or XP? I tore the XP machine apart today and now it is clean as a whistle and running as cool as a cucumber..

Boy, I have not heard XT mentioned for many years now, but I did have a few IBM XT machines along the way...

it works that way with 10.6.6, worked that way with our last 5 computers.

I know, I'll be quiet now.

Re: Thats it!!!! I am fed up...

Been setting up an Ubuntu Samba server for a week now. After all windows servers it's a pretty steep learning curve, but it's so durned fast with reasonably priced hardware and 0 cost software that it'll be well worth it. Will serve up files to about 50 users.

I've had a junior supervisor reboot a windows server because a simple file copy dogged it down so bad he thought it was hung. whatapieceajunk.

I've set up Linux mail and proxy servers in the past. Biggest problem I ever had was trying to remember the root password if something goes wrong.
