Oh and I got a hold of the original owner, long story short she started taking on water in the port side hull, he gave the boat away and the 2nd owner drilled these to try to get the water out

As I put my finger in, the water starts coming out

The first step toward recovery is to admit that you have a sinking problem :)

You are now a member of a large (and growing) fraternity. (With a few fairer members as well)

We'll all be here to watch your progress. Good job of assessing the condition and good detective work with the PO as well. Good luck!

Re: The beginning of my ending

Given the new found condition of your saturated and decomposing boat, I withdraw my suggestion for a band-aid fix until later in the year and strongly suggest demolition and reconstruction procedures to commence at dawn on your next day off.

All of the safety factors built into your boat have been voided by it's deteriorating condition and it is now a liability. It wouldn't surprise me if your maiden launch turned into a maiden sinking.

Two cents worth of friendly advice: your wife isn't going to be happy with a restoration project, which is likely to take over two years to complete, if in fact you do complete it. I recommend that you get another boat - newer - better - working - floating - that you can use right now. If you have to, sell this boat for what it's worth to buy the other boat. Boat projects are for people who enjoy working on them as much as using them.

Re: The beginning of my ending

Yes, a full blown resto on glass boat is tough, dirt and expensive job...Its reserved for those who are diagnosed with an special case of crazy...

If your wife is ready to go boating this summer, she MAY not understand or appreciate the process...

There are cheaper and faster alternatives to getting on the water... yes, a restoration gives you a like new boat for a fraction of the cost of a new one, but that's really only worthwhile if: (i) you have a strong emotional tie to the boat (e.g. passed down to you from grandpa, the boat you have always wanted, etc...); (ii) you have a good workspace and healthy supply of tools (or a budget to acquire them); (iii) as stated above, you like working on boats as much as you enjoy using them....; (iv) you are obsessive about details and safety, yet also patient; (v) you have a few grand that can afford to sink into a boat that you will likely never recoup....; and (vi) you have an extremely tolerant/understanding spouse/significant other (and in some cases, neighbors) who can tolerate dust, stinky smells, etc...

If you can check all the boxes above, rock on...

Well I'm going to join in on this one I too just got an old Bayliner, Blue Grandma. Were all in this together. Safety is number one. I'm new here also. There is a wealth of info in this forum and all these guys give you the inspiration, experience and knowledge to help you thru. I saw a thread where a guy on here cut his boat added length to it, whoa!!! blew my mind. Good luck, have fun, be safe. I'll be following right along

Re: The beginning of my ending

So, did what I could up until this weekend and took her out. AHHH what fun. Ran her last weekend on the muffs with no problems, put her in Saturday and she wont start. Luckily, My dad has his boat slipped pretty close to where I launched, so in preparation of any issues I asked him to bring his boat by in case I need some assistance and he did.
So we launch her and right off the bat she is leaning a little to the port side ( was told this was an issue by the Original owner so it wasn't a shock). Finally get ehr started witht the cowl off and 10 secs after replacing the cowl it stalls and wont restart. I think I have an exhaust leak?? So whatever, I took her out for a short ride and the motor feels strong and popped it up on plane pretty quick. Long story short, kept her on the water about 2 hours, motor kept stalling out when trying to idle, and when shifting into forward. Get back on the trailer, pop the three drain plugs and the port side drains out about 3 gallons. (this area is not part of the bilge, it is actually lower than the bilge, and there should not be any water in it.) It is actually where the foam is. So, decided the cap is coming off ASAP. Just to justify this decision I decided to cut out a 2X2 foot section (which was waterlogged ply) with a jig saw under the seat and right above the foamed in area. proceeded to pull out a 150lbs of soaking wet foam. yesterday jumped in and started disconnecting everything from the cap.luckily there isn't alot of stuff, mainly fuel lines, through hulls, and wire and hose straps. There are 3 bulk heads that original or not have a piece of 1X1 bolted to the top and glued to the deck from underneath. I have 9 more bolts, some wiring to the console, the rubrail to remove and then she is coming off. Thats gonna be the fun part. Unitl next time, safe boating everyone

thanks for the advice , but I do enjoy working on boats, just a little bummed that I actually HAVE to do it. I am one of those guys that can't leave well enough alone, I am always trying to improve something make it faster, stronger. And I have some restoration experience however not with boats. I bought an old 79 Yamaha xs1100 motorcycle that had been sitting in a guys backyard under a tarp for ten years and completely tore it down and rebuilt it stronger, faster and definitely better looking. I have a feel for what it is going to take

Re: The beginning of my ending

OK fellas need some advice.. I've got all my rivets drilled everything disconnected between my hull and cap. Problem is my cap in the splash well is glued to my transom. The splashwell is part of the cap and it has a lip that covers the top the transom. I have cut through the glue horizontally but the i cant figure out how to get to the front side of the transom . I really have no angle I can see without cutting the skin on the hull or cap. Any one have any ideas? Thanks

Good luck with that boat, I particular love the design and the middle console setup!! What size is is again? Any ways I give you a lot of props to dig into a full restoration and hope you pull through it. I will be looking forward to watching your progress. Remember it is people like you who make this restoration forum section worth every minute of my precious time during the day to read others problems that I may too face one day!

Call me crazy but I love restoring classic cars and once I retire from the military I may just take up restoring boats on my free time!!! Seems like a lot of work and I know I have no idea yet, but I'm crazy and love the idea of building a boat back from the grave yard and making it truly your design.

Cut Vertically up through on the inside of the transom out the top of the cap. You can patch it later.

Re: The beginning of my ending

I tried with my oscillating multi tool. the depth I need is about 8-10 inches though and I would have to do it from the inside which would be possible if I were a ten year old boy. Not much room at all in my bildge. here are some pics that might clear it up for anyone who may be confused. WOG's got it

the seam in the pics is between the cap and hull.
tried to post pic. but kept getting incorrect file extension GIF?? My file was a jpg.put it as a video and it posted it might work.

here is the link to one just in case.

I wazs thinking about cutting in from the top. Slicing a line through the skin with the oscillating tool and running my sawsall down the inner face of the transom, which needs replaced anyway??
BTW thanks for the reply woodonglass

Yep, if you can't get access from inside underneath, then go at it from the top. Whatever it takes. You can repair it on the go back.

Re: The beginning of my ending

So SUCCESSS!!! I have gotten the cap off. So once my oldests Allstar softball tourney is over (I'm one fo the coaches) I will have some time to do some more work. Took some pics but forgot my SD card at home. I will get some more pics up tomorrow. I had to cut the cap skin above the transom wall, used my skill saw, sawzall, prybar and she popped off. Man this boat looks huge with the cap off, barge like
