That Elto Quad looks cool as heck. How are parts availability on those? I want one, how hard are they to find?

You have a test bed tinny. Run 'em all. The Quad sounds interesting. Gonna be Googling.

Hard to find? Not really. I know where there's a slightly later one available - I think it's a 1930 Quad. Not cheap, but a lot less than a new 18-20... There's still quite abit of old big iron out there if you look for it. Johnson made a 4-cylinder big boy back in the late '20s too - a 26hp monster called the V-45.

Parts availability? Depends on the supply of parts motors to act as donors. The Antique Outboard Club is a good resource, too. Also helps to get to know "Mr. Elto", aka Sam Vance.

These aren't motors for someone with no mechanical knowledge or ability. The battery ignition Eltos like my Quad are really neat in that they do exactly what the old ads proclaimed - "Starts with a quarter turn!" It takes some practice, but if you rock the flywheel back and forth against the compression, it'll light off with a flick of the wrist. They didn't call them knuckle busters for nothin'. Plus, with further practice, you can actually idle down, hit the stop button and restart it in reverse! I did it once with the 2-cylinder Elto Speedster (foreground in photo) and backed it into the dock, wrecking the prop! Clearly I needed more practice...

And the winner was.... a 1966 Evinrude Fastwin 18, belonging to a friend of mine. I replaced the clutch dog in it and ran it on the boat to test that she was no longer jumping out of gear. The boat and motor ran perfectly! He picked up his motor today, so now I have to pick something else...

Ahh Fastwin, a wonderful motor for that 14'. I agree, you need something else.:p

Second motor to grace the transom was a 1966 Johnson 33hp - another customer motor. What a beast! More so, considering the boat is rated for 30! Handled it well, though she did point the bow skywards pretty spectacularly when coming up on plane. Could be due to 230 lbs. of me, a full tank, and the 100+ lb. motor all in the back... ;)

Apparently I didn't learn my lesson with the 33hp Johnson. I rebuilt a Sea King (Gale) 35hp last week (piston replacement & tuneup stuff) and got some break in time on it over the weekend. It was a handful, but a lot of fun! Very hard to get pics, at speed, but I managed...

sweet! I used to have '66 33 hp too. Great old motor with lots of low end grunt. I wish I still had it, but I don't miss removing the flywheel. That could be an ordeal at times.
