The resale value on these two is almost the same but with a 6 year difference. I mostly boat in rivers in the Philadelphia area that are sometimes shallow so I was leaning more towards the outboard. Am I in the wrong here ? It was really an eye opener to see the valuations between the two. The Sea Ray has the packages that I like but i'm having a hard time buying a 99' boat when for a little more I can go 05'. I'm guessing the quality between the two is the biggest player here.

I'm replacing a '86 17ft Charger Cierra with a Mercruiser 3.0 I/O . It has done well but the prop being so low in the water has resulted in alot dings hence looking at outboards.

I'm currently looking at these two boats.

There are so many under utilized rivers in our country it seems.
Too bad that there are very few boats powered by jet drives such as the Mercruiser. Where I live the Shetucket is very scenic and very empty because of the underwater hazards. To use the Connecticut river one aquaintance bought an aluminum Australian jet boat trailered from the left coast dealer. He had shallow parts of the river all to himself.

Maestro, I think I would vote for the outboard powered boat, especially if you plan to trailer it. (I have had a 19' SeaRay I/O and now have a 21' SeaSwirl OB) The I/O will weigh in at 800# to the OB's 325#. Trailering an I/O can require a larger towing vehicle. Of course if you are only going a couple of miles, and use a paved ramp, the vehicle is not too critical

The OB powered boat will go in much shallower water, and if you do get stuck, you will be able to push the boat off easier. The I/O will be better on gas, but it will be much more costly to maintain. The OB will have slightly better performance and handle a bit "lighter" on the water. You may need trim tabs on the I/O

How does the '99 look? if it in comparable condition to the '05, it is probably a reasonable deal.

hey maestro......

WELCOME TO I BOATS

UH....im confused.....why are you considering a i/o when youve allready got one and it is not the right set up for the kind of boating you do?

the only thing you would be doing is up grading the boat you allready have....and still have the same problems ?

im a ray fan...so im biased......however...i think thats steep for a 10 year old boat........key words...im going to list with a broker......

that means the broker will take a commision....it also means the broker will try to list for the same price as the owner could not sell at current asking price. privately.........

go with cash .....go over the whole boat....transom ...floor....every inch....ask lots of questions.....and offer him a fair price according to your findings.....

cheers

I only was looking at I/O boats because it was tough to find an outboard that I liked ( at least in my neck of the woods ).

The main reason for upgrading is for dependability. My current boat shows it's age and is at a point where it's going to start absorbing more money and possibly some water ;-) .

I'm planning on offering less on both boats because I feel that they are both a little steep. If you had to throw out a reasonable price what would you offer ? I know it's tough without seeing the boat in person.

the maxium is under powered. the sea ray may be, but you could easily sell what on it and repower. as far as depth of the prop both can be trimmed up.
