GPS for aircraft use are programmed to provide the option of accurate vertical speed as well as space speed.<br /><br />Go to Garmin and look up aviation GPS units.

Well that makes sense . . . So the individual machines may be inaccurate in different situations than they were intended, but the capability of GPS allows for multiple uses if the machine knows what to do with the info.

Also, your GPS aet on magnetic will not always give you the same direction of travel as your compass because of currents. In a strong enough current your speedo and your compass can tell you you're going somewhere you are not. You could really be going backwards in reference to the shore. If you start a trip and go true north until you no longer see the place you left fromand you turn around and go true south to get back home you might end up somewhere you don't intend to be because of currents. a GPS can be set with the starting point and used to get you back home. It knows where you are really at and which direction you must go to get back.

I just removed the paddle wheel mount on my boat to install my smart tabs. I have no intent on re-installing it on that boat because I use the GPS.

To expand a tad on JB's comments - GPS and GPS related technology are in limited use today for precise air navigation. As time goes on and the confidence in the technology increases this technology will replace the "air highways" of today for both commercial and general aviation traffic. The impact will be huge. An aircraft will be able to fly from discrete point to discrete point on instruments rather than being vectored along artificial highways. It will save not only time but vast quantities of fuel.
