Also, your GPS aet on magnetic will not always give you the same direction of travel as your compass because of currents. In a strong enough current your speedo and your compass can tell you you're going somewhere you are not. You could really be going backwards in reference to the shore. If you start a trip and go true north until you no longer see the place you left fromand you turn around and go true south to get back home you might end up somewhere you don't intend to be because of currents. a GPS can be set with the starting point and used to get you back home. It knows where you are really at and which direction you must go to get back.
