Hi all,
The '74 3hp Clinton I was working on RUNS!

For some of you who helped me here:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=288748

Thank you! I had a chance over the weekend to water test it on a 12' alum row boat and it worked great. As everyone said, it is slow and vibrates like crazy, especially at lower speeds.

It starts right up, though.

If I can get the other one running, I will sell at least one in hopes of getting a mid 60's Johnson 7.5hp that will run smoother.

Thanks again for all the help,

Re: The old Clinton 3hp RUNS!

Thanks! No one was more pleasently surprised than I was.

This is the 2nd one that I have successfully revived and had running, the first was a '59 Johnson 18hp.

I worked on two others over the winter, but haven't tested them yet. Maybe over the next couple weeks if the weather is decent.

This silly Clinton actually ran great. Decent power, good idle. I ran it last night for a few minutes on an aluminum 12' jon boat and it was a little faster than on the V bottem boat. I need to get my dog to stay up on the bow to keep it balanced. It went much better when she was up there and it was better balanced. 3hp isn't much!

Quick! Sell it before it quits running. Shine it all up and put it on Craig's List, then look for a nice Johnnyrude.

Be careful, though, and don't tell it it's for sale. It will refuse to start when a potential buyer comes along. :D

Re: The old Clinton 3hp RUNS!

Excellent advice that I keep hearing again and again!

So, anyone know of a Jonnyrude 10hp and 3hp that are available?

By the way, one thing I do really like about this motor is how light it is. Any idea what the two motors above weigh?

Also, the Clinton has about a 1 quart gas tank that I have to refill about every hour or so! I have been filling quart oil jugs with gas mix from the tank on the pontoon boat so they are easier to transport and pour into the tank while afloat. How bad of an idea is that?

Finding the Clinton weight may be a trick though you could use your bathroom scale weigh yourself with motor in hand then yourself alone.
A Johnson/Evinrude 3hp twin is about 34lbs.I would guess the Clinton at 27 to 30. J/E 10 circa. 63 is about 69lbs.As far as your oil container gas cans it surely is handy but I think it's not legal to use non approved containers.
I have a cute little 1 gal gas can that works well though not used for an outboard right now.
