Its officially spring here on the Oregon coast as the Osprpeys have returned. Every year they return anywhere from the first of April to the end of April, Usually sometime around the middle. They allways screach all day to let you know they are back. You never notice when they leave, you just notice they are gone. Never did a search to see where they go, someone told me one time that they go all the way to brazil.

That is so cool, i could never get enough of seeing them plucking a fish out of the water like you would take a beer out of an ice chest

We have osprey's all year long. They nest in trees right off the lake up the river. My kids always enjoy watching them from so close.

If we don't make too much noise, they don't get spooked and fly off. They are used to boat traffic.

Funny thing a couple of years ago, there were some do gooders tried to say that there were only 13 mating pairs of ospreys in the whole state. H*ll, there are 13 pairs in one arm right in front of my house. They quickly had there heads handed to them. :D

I had one snatch a fish from less than 10 feet from my boat one time. Man, they are a huge bird. Some can have a 5' wingspan.

There are ospreys at the in-laws cabin in WI during the summer. Truly a huge bird.

I've never had one grab a fish near me, but a few years ago had a bald eagle grab a fish 50 feet behind my boat while were idling along. A verymagnificent sight!

Eagles just smatch fish from the water and remain in flight. Ospreys on the otherhand crash right in the water. They are not afraid to get wet.

Me and my best friend where fishing Lake Mcloud river and saw a eagle overhead flying in a circle. My buddie saw a dead fish in the water so i told him to keep our pole's out of the water and to stand very still.......Low and be hold......he circled again and flew a foot off the water and grabbed the fish and off he went.......Told my buddie that was a special moment you only see on the Discovery channel. God is great!!!

I pulled it out the other day and managed to get a pretty good shot of a white snowy egret. They are so hard to get a picture of, if ya just twich, they fly off.

Our Osprey hasn't got back yet - course the ice just went off the lake yesterday. Caught 8 really nice trout, full of eggs, sent them back to get bigger.

I'm always amazed when the Osprey come to the lake, like every evening, doesn't look like any fish on the surface; then, bang they hit the water and leave with a fish. They don't miss often.

I always thought that also.
We have tons of Eagles were we fish on Swift reservoir. They are always plucking trout out 10 feet from the boat.

However 3 years ago we saw some large birds sitting on the shore and diving into the water snagging fish.

We trolled over and sure enough they were Eagles!
First and only time we have ever seen them do that. It was wild to watch.

One thing about the animal kingdom is that when you think that you have them figured out, they change the rules.

I was watching some seagulls the other day while I was eating my lunch down by the boat ramp at the bay and they were setting on the water and actually diving down and getting small crabs off the bottom, water had to be about 5' deep. Never saw gulls do that either.

Thats funny, here there is an ospreys nest on every channel marker in the ICWW. If you get close in passing they usually dont flee but puff up their feathers open their mouths and try to look as big as possible. I have even seen them make scare passes at people to close while they have babies. Nature is awesome!
