How about testing trhe oil pump with a drill? Before I started my rebuilt IL6 for the first time I "primed" the oil pump with the shaft from another distributor. You should be able to get some (~10lbs) pressure with a cordless drill and this shaft. You obviously do this with the distributor removed. Make sure you have the key on so the gauge has voltage.

Let me clear up a few things:
--The oil pump is not locked up. It turns smoothly.
--There were no pieces from the old fuel pump. The pumping lever apparently just got bent out of alignment.
--The drive gear is about 95% intact...only a little bit on the right hand side has been chipped.
--The distributor gear is secured to the shaft 100%.
--I took the plate off and inspected the advance mechanism. It appears to be fine.
--There is a reddish looking device that rides the distributor shaft - center right - (see picture at: http://photographycourse.net/distributor.jpg ) that seems to have a piece missing. Might be nothing.
--I re-checked the oil pump slot (where the dist. shaft goes in) it is clean. The end of the distributor shaft shows some wear.... as tho it had been riding on metal. Not a lot, but I can see it.
--The points were not separating, so I reset them.
Finally, none of this would seem to explain why the rotor jumps about 90 degrees clockwise when I try to start the engine.
The distributor is tightly clamped to the engine, the shaft is in fine shape, the gears are in decent shape.....yet the darn thing jumps/??????????????

what do you mean by "jumps 90* clockwise" ?
Have you tried turning the rotor on the shaft?
Pay very close attention to the top part of the shaft. Some of those units had a 3 piece shaft. The actual points opening cam was seperate from the upper shaft. remove the felt pad and look inside the shaft for a screw.

P.S., the little plastic thing beside the points cam used to hold a lubricant sponge ring to keep the cam lubes and stop the rubbing block on the points from wearing out.

It would appear that the problem has been diagnosed.
It appears that the new fuel pump is the wrong model and the pump lever (which goes just to the right of the cam drive gear) has been smacking the drive gear and knocking the timing gear off.
I will take the fuel pump back and get the correct model (I have confirmed the part number).
I'll know if this is the problem as soon as I pull the fuel pump (too much rain to do it now) because the pumping lever should show signs of wear at the point it's been hitting the drive gear.
Wish me luck boys......
