In August 2010 I purchased a 22' 1979 Islander with the 120 hp OMC. I bought it with the intent of turning it into a center console. With A LOT of help from my dad and 2 friends it was converted. It has finally reached completion. We hit the water today and I couldn't be more pleased. With a 15 pitch prop we reached a gps speed of 28 mph with a great holeshot. I have a 17" prop to try but I really like the launch with the 15. I had a camera but didn't get any pics! :facepalm: I also got to test the 62" Minn-Kota 24v, 80 lb trolling motor. It works great by the way. I leave on Wednesday for a 4 day fishing trip with the Beloved white leg of death. It's dock manners are so good it's crazy. Smooth shifting and a turning radius that's amazing. I know a severe flaming will be coming telling me about how bad this combo is. I'm a man, I'm 46 I can take it!!!

JD, what is the distance from the mount on your MinnKota to the water??? I have a Terrova 80 60" I want to use on my Islander but i just doesn't look long enough. Ahh you using bow mount or transom mount??

It's a bow mount salt water model. 62" is the longest they make I believe.

i can't say a word, considering that there are two White Legs of Death sticking out when i wear shorts......

really, the stringer drive may be one of those ideas which would have fared better with different marketing, better parts availability, etc

Looks good, I actually prefer the OMC except for buying/ finding parts.


I'm not real sure how you use the head there, must be a Wisconsin thing.

what, there's a TP holder too? wow.....

so do you have trouble convincing crew to go stick their head into the bow locker to find the anchor?

Well I've had the boat out a few more times and I couldn't be happier. 2 weeks ago we had it out on Lake Michigan for some fishing action. We went 1 for 1 with a 15lb King. No other hits or misses. The Lake was rough. 4-5 foot rollers that were being pounded by the wind. She handled like a dream. She maintained trolling speeds very well. Last weekend we went up to Eagle River, WI for a 4 day weekend. I did quite a bit of fishing. The casting deck is really, really nice. The 80 lb Minn Kota works like a champ. It easily moves the boat regardless of wind. The highlight was a 38-40" musky that I caught on Sunday night. I don't have an exact length because I couldn't find my tape measure and I was out alone. Plus I wanted to get it back in the water as quickly as possible. I laid it across the 32" motor cover and about 8" was hanging over.

I also had 2 adults and 3 teenage kids on board, she got up on plane with no problem. I really couldn't be happier with it. What a difference between this 22 footer and my last boat. That was a 16' crestliner tinnie. I feel like I'm driving a real boat!
