Oops. You mean, don't roll my eyes period. I was only trying to be comical. ;) :) :D I have felt that plate after a minute of operation and it got quite hot. Hey Baylor said his never had one. I believed him. Can you give me any more help on how to find this hole. I thought I looked quite carefully and didn't see it. Also, can this work be acomplished without dismounting from the break out another thousand? It seems that a very important part of the operation and maintenance was ommitted from the manual. In the abscence of any other guidance I can only rely on the experienced. By the way, I now know which side of the boat is the port side so I know I was looking on the correct side. thanks again

Techno....I was right on the coast about halfway between LA and SF, in San Luis Obispo Co. Now, I'm within 15 miles of about 50 lakes, all with nice launching ramps and full of great fish.

It gets cold here in the Winter, for sure, so that's when I do my work and earn my money. The rest of the year is for fishing and other more pleasant activities.

Moving here, I got twice the house for half the money. Not a bad bargain, really, since the house in CA was paid off. Now, this one is, too, and my retirement fund is looking good.

Now, you'll have to excuse me. I have to take my old boat and old outboard out and catch some largemouths and northern pike. I'll catch them, then catch you later.

Paul Moir...

Yup. My geriatric 35 hp Johnson is pretty simple, too. Timing light? What on earth would I do with that? Idle? There's this little adjustment for that, right on the port side of the outboard. I even have real gears for forward and reverse, too. [grinning]

Mr Plant, Thank you and I am familiar with the territory and the demand. Sounds like you made a wise decision and to be frank I was not unsure you hadn't. I look forward to your "fish stories" ;) when you return. I sold out in my younger days and probably should have held on a little longer but even that decision(sp) is looking better and better. Looks like we will be building houses for the kids instead of them buying someone elses dirt. :D

Techno, the "hand" test has verifed you are not cooling. So drop the lower unit and go thru the waterpump. If you want to check to see if the powerhead has no obstructions/sediment in the cooling passages, then with the lower unit off you can use a short piece of 1/2" copper (24") and solder the correct fitting so you can attach a garden hose. Slide this in the same hole that the long copper tube from your water pump goes into. Don't use high pressure, just turn on slow and you should have water streaming out the exaust relief. You can start it this way and check your cooling. DO NOT REV motor-high idle only. AS for the illusive tell tale, forget about it for now, that's the least of your problems. I'll send a pic of mine when I go to the lake next time.

My question would be what was Mr Baylors' question. I think you (GW) answered all of my questions. I'm

AMAZING! My English IA prof postulated that there is no such thing as good writing, only good re-writing and I have been doing my best to prove his right ever since receivig an A in his class. I didn't think that changing my Signature Block would update it everywhere on the sight or even thread. Ain't technology grand. BIG BROTHER IS HERE AND HE AS ALLIES.

technostupeedo,

I'm going to be away from the computer for a few days. I'm hoping/betting that when I regain access this thread will be up to at least 75 replies and that you will be reporting first hand the joyous occasion of the motor running as the designers fully intended.. :)

 As a side light to this, I did fail typing the first time I took it, guess to re-write well you must proof read. Or do ya suppose it was the gremlins... Don't be the farm on it. :D

Houston, this Pheonix Cruiser. We do have water flow. Also, water around the spark plugs. Is this common?

Well it looks as if Mission Control is OTL. I got the horse before the cart on this one. See comments: Merc 700E not peeing. I will add that it did run in reverse though poorly. Also, the block flow seemed unobstructed. :D What is the life expectancy of these pumps?

Yes this is notoriously common on Mercs. Check out CC's take on this and possible remedy. Also, if you do a search I think some have come up with similar derivations on how to fix problem without pulling off water jacket cover.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=000005#

Also re: the impeller, sometimes you can find/purchase a replacement housing if the seal between the impeller and current housing isn't reasonably watertight.
