Thermostat impellor question

Just picked up a 1971 Evinrude 60 hp model 60173c been sitting for about 3 years, started in a barrel, started instantly and ran perfect, not much if any water from exhaust.
Removed a lot of bees hiding where the water exits. Put the muffs on and starter again, no water from exhaust but lots from propeller and slits from above cavitation plate and the little hole that points toward front of motor
While running on muffs I kept checking the head temp never got above 80 degrees, ran about 15 minutes.
My Questions:
1. I know I should change the impellor, however don.t want to at this time if it's working, therefore if I ran 15 plus minutes and never reached above 80 degrees does this mean the impellor is working at this time?
2. Would you recommend changing the thermostat?

impellor is not a big costly job... why not change it instead of risking broken parts going up and blocking water circulation

temps at 80 measured where ?? did you scan the PH with an infrared meter to check block temps

by the looks of it thermosttat may be open so you may as well pull it, inspect it , test it, replace it is doubtful..... or... it i simply missing :-(

Being a 50 year oldie definitely both, water pump or impeller alone depending on liner condition and thermostat as well. Will cool much better.

I will replace the impellor after I go for a test drive, used a infrared gun at head and thermostat cover, I could also hold my hand indefinitely on head.
Just want to go for a test drive before replacing impellor. Can muffs give a false impression on water pump working? I was thinking perhaps the presure from the hose would force the water through the engine bypassing the pump?

The reason I'm not changing the impeller at this time is because this boat was dropped off at my home asking if I wanted to buy it so I wanted to give it a short test on the water first.

Could be possible, to be 100% sure test the motor with lower leg submerged in a barrel that way the water pump will work on his own..

Water has to be well above the pump. I run mine with water about half way up the leg.

If it's running cold, I would not test run it -- will not operate properly, so will not be a good test. If you want the motor, make an offer based on current condition.

Use of muffs is definitely not a reliable test for operating temperature/water pump function.

Measuring the temp at the cylinder head or exhaust cover it's relative, if that 50 year oldie motor was run in salt water surely will have reduced water passages and cool bit less. For the same reason will operate at a higher temp compared to having immaculate clean passages as when out of the box and we're not talking about having an overheat condition whatsoever.

Don't need to fill water around the middle leg, will be more than enough just around the upper small plate, both lower leg's water intkes will be fully submerged and impeller pumping right if not fully shot.

6 or 8 inches above intake.

Motor may be running cold.

thanks all, I'll check it at the lake. I seem to be having a difficult time finding the right pump and thermostat.
