How do you really know if your thermostat is working properly? I have a 1989 50hp force it has a new water pump and it 'pees' like all the rest of the 50's I have read about in here.I held my hand on the head after it had been idling for about 5-10 min and it was hot but not so hot that you would have to remove your hand. I was just curious.

thnx
mark

I would imagine that if it ran for 5 to 10m min. and did not over heat then it would be working

From your discription, sounds like it is working.
You could remove it and place it in a pan of water, slowly heat the water till the thermostat opens, check the water temp with a thermometer. Temp should match the temp of the thermostat.
Your motor should have a 130* thermostat, part number 18-3556 at NAPA store.
