Does anyone know if I should get water out of the pee hole in the lower cowl as soon as the engine starts, or do I have to wait for the thermostat to open to allow the water through the engine? I have a 1988 Johnson 120 V4 VRO engine.
so there a bypass that allows the water to pass to the pee hole while the t'stat is closed, and then once it opens, the water passes through the engine and out to the pee hole?
Water is always in the engine but does not circulate until the thermostat opens. In other words, the thermostat is on the outgoing end of the waterflow. The rest of the water flow is discharged. The tell-tale lets you know that the water pump is working, but not how well. It tells you virtually nothing about the cooling of the engine.
