Re: thermostats

Looks like it hit a sand bank, and water pump suck it right up to the heads.....A good and thorough clean of all system is in order also I?ll recommend a impeller/pump check. I think no other harm can be done in the t-stats ...but check t-stats seat and poppet valves......

Re: thermostats

All water cooled motors need the stats in place to act a a restriction even when they are open to ensure water is circulated properly to all parts of the motor.
Without them in place you can end up with hot and cold spots which can hurt the motor.
The motor also needs to run at the proper temperature to burn the fuel properly.
Install new ones or test and install the old ones if the function properly and do not have corrosion on them.

You can test the stats in a pot of water while heating it up to see what temp it opens and closes and making sure it meets the specs in manual.

Re: thermostats

The purpose of thermostats is NOT just to stop the engine getting too hot but to keep them at operating temperature. The majority of engine wear takes place as its getting to optimum temperature.

Re: thermostats

Since you know there was a clog in one place it might be a good idea to warm it up on the hose and feel around the heads and block for any areas too hot to touch. The heads ought to be hot but not HOT. If you can't touch some areas it might indicate other clogs are still in there.

Re: thermostats

When you get it back together, leave the hoses off of the thermo hsg and start it up and see what comes out of the block. Easy way to flush.

Re: thermostats

The thermostat housing is at the end of the cooling system on that engine. It you've got sand pumped all the way into that housing, you probably have sand pumped all through the powerhead. You should consider removing the heads and the head covers to check for sand blocking the cooling passages inside the heads and around the cylinders. You may even have to pull the water passage cover off the top of the powerhead and look down inside the block between the V-banks to check for sand deposits.

Re: thermostats

I'd still run it with the hoses off first, put it together and try it before I did the work above. Granted, you may need the work, but one thing at a time.
