What leads me to this is the depth finder will say low voltage while out sometimes. I have it set to 11.5 v before it says that. I have never had trouble restarting but im never out all day. I have checked my rectifier per J. reeves it checks good. I have checked the charging of batery while idling and just off idle and the battry resting volts were 13.10 the system will be low right after startup i guess due to motor just being cranked and will creep back up to 13.1 and not quite to 13.2 or so. Checked the stator resistance between the yellow and yellow/grey wires it is .8 does this signal a bad stator on the charging side? What other tests should i perform to confirm this?

Motor runs well cranks first try but i think the battery is not being charged?

Oh the motor is a 1981 johnson 60hp.

Anytime your voltmeter reads above 12.6 volts the battery is being charged.

The battry sitting the day i tested the carging of it when i hooked it up i always disconnect my battery, anyway the day i tested it at rest it was reading at the battery before motor was started, 13.1volts, and it was days before that it came off the charger.

Your voltmeter is not too hot. A fully charged battery at rest should read 12.68 VDC ... 13.1 just isn't possible. Try a different DVOM.

I admit it is a cheap tester ill try my other , but that still does not explain the depth finder saying low batt while running or just starting up?

Re: Think my stator is bad?

Read the voltage across the battery terminals with the motor at least at a fast idle ... should get >13.5 VDC. If you don't could be rectifier, stator and wiring. Check stator with engine running by measuring across the yellows ... should get > 20 VAC, yes AC. If you have AC voltage, most likely rectifier is bad then.

And use a decent DVOM. BTW, the DF voltage being may be due to wiring voltage drop, depending on the installation.

Re: Think my stator is bad?

My other more expensive dvm says resting crank battry 13.2 and the trolling motor battery 13.1... and another trollin moter battery says 12.8 or so and the truck battery says 12.47v? so it seems to be working?

Re: Think my stator is bad?

i disconnected the 13.2v at rest battery and put one of the deep cycles on that was at 12.87 at rest and let it idle for 5-10 mins and it got up to 13.07/8 volts at idle before i cut it off, then it started to fall bact to 13.02 after a few mins not runni ng, so i know it charging!

i need to isolate my electronics and put them on there on deepcyle under the console, so there not pulling off the smaller starting battery!
