thinking of converting OB to an I\O on older boat

I have a 1958 glassmagic 18' skiboat. I am in the process of restoring it and have been tinkiering with the idea of ditching the outboard and using an I\O setup from a donor boat. I have also thought of using a jet ski motor and pump for propulsion. I have thought of a 4.3 v-6 setup. but dont know the best setup there is. i understand that OMC is or is becoming extinct though.

any thoughts on this or past experience with a project like this.
this is the boat i have. mines red.

i think i have the room in the boat for the conversion.

having said this, I am very mechanically inclined, have a full shop and I have rebuilt several boats, a 1971 powercat, 1978 carlson cvx, a ranger bassboat, and am presently working on a 1961 glastron skiflite. ( I say this only to prequalify my ability and determination.)
these boats have all used outboards that i have rebuilt or reworked in some manner.

I would like to use an I\O setup to keep the boat lines clean, without an outboard poking up at the rear, and also because my wife is pressuring me into buying a newer I\O bowrider because they are quieter than an OB.
so... if i could combine some newer technology in propulsion and keep the noise down some, i would love to keep the boat. it would be win win.
i fully realize i could just buy a newer 4 stroke outboard that is quieter than a vintage OB but I would rather have the conversion for conversation value.

thanks for any and all input.

Honestly it is sooooooooo much work that by the time you account for all the parts, materials, and labor..... you can go out and buy yourself a new 09 boat.
You may be better off posting in the "restorations" forum.
