Re: Thinking of getting a boat

Thank you very much for your knowledge and time, its amazing how many people (now including myself) love motors and boats. I will in fact, do a compression test in the next few days. The transom will be interesting also I hope the plywood between the fiberglass and the now rotten 2x4 isn't bad too. I will post pics soon. Once again thanks

Re: Thinking of getting a boat

Well tonight i figured I'd try to see if the engine would fart of something heck maybe berp telling me she wants to go. I pumped some of the left over fuel that was still in the lines with the primer bulb turned the choke on fliped the swithes on the carb to slow and rich then a lever I saw lower on the motor to start and pulled a few times. Nothing then I thought that the battery was disconnected Dumb of Me, then hooked the battery up. So I dug up the key the guy gave me just to see if there was enough juice in the battery, turned it to start and bang she back fired. Not bad I thought as my wife upstairs was yelling at me to quite down, then I figured lets giver one more for good measure, I did and BRRRBRRR she ran by herself for a few seconds till she choked out. 50 years and she wanted to go, I know if I tried again with out the choke she will run. I'm excited, now I have to get parts for the lower unit.

Re: Thinking of getting a boat

Thats alright. If you come across anyone with the LU let me know, also tring to rebuild mine, are there any good tips for when I put it all back together, I need to get all new bearings and most of the seals. The seal just behind the prop looks good, the one in its own housing with the o ring around it. The seal on top of the pump also looks good as well as the pump. One thing is that one of the bushings just below the top seal after the pump the outer race is stuck to the housing and I'm tring to crimp it in with out damaging the houing its slow and was wondering if the schematics are right it says it is suposed to be a bushing but it was a needle bearing in there. Odd, I did notice there was a recall to put in the needle bearing instead in 1961 I think. Anyways, like should I use gasket sealent on the water pump housing and aound the lower gear houing and the main housing and should I replace the funny rubber seal that looks like a stretched o ring thats been thats been cut the old one still looks good and where can I get it no one sells it?

Re: Thinking of getting a boat

I just wanted to say thank you for all the help I recieved from this site and I'm superhappy with my out come from my first boat project. I did rebuild the lower unit, it was siezed when I got it. Removed the rotten transome and epoxyed a new one back in with West systems epoxys the stuff is really amazing and repainted the interior with tremclad aswell as buffed all the exterior and top of boat with a two in one cleaner wax sealer. Here are my pics that you guys love on Falcon Lake, Manitoba, Canada. I was doing about 18mph at the time. Still tinkering with the trim angle and carb. though. She is a real head turner at the boat launch lots of people complementing on the condition and the age, not bad for 250 dollar boat plus 80 for the lower unit parts and 200 for the rest, many late nights but the time lost is knowledge gained. I love my boat.:)

It looks great. The color combo of the boat matches the engine well.

Is Falcon Lake where they filmed that show Falcon Beach?

It looks like you have a single line tank, was a fuel pump added onto that engine?

I would think you should get more than 18 mph on it. Is it all set up yet?

No it wasn't where they filmed Falcon beach the show it was filmed on lake winnipeg at winnipeg beach about 45min north of winnipeg, the beach is nice but the water is dirty, ecoli warnnings every year. The real Falcon Beach is in the Canadian shield one hour east of Winnipeg 15min from Kenora Ontario nice beach town and the water blue and clean. As for the boat i'm still trying to set it up. I've played with the trim setting I found the best is when it is on the lowerst setting so the motor is sitting furthest in the water but then I was told to pull it back and the boat will lift up and eventually come down but it doesn't. It just sits up with the bow up. Then I was told to not have the motor locked down to the boat so if I hit a rock it will lift up but I don't think that sounds right won't the motor move around alot. Then I've been playing with the fine adjustments and they work ok but the high rattles so much it moves itselve to lean. I checked the advancement throdle setting they look good but i noticed the govenor on it for fuel economy is what the manual states so i figured I would remove the setting and now the carb. butterfly opens up all the way instead of half way. Also should I make sure the hi and low speed jets are at factory settings low 1 turn and hi 3/4turn and put the fine tuning nobs back to. The last ride was yesterday and I did get it up to 19mph in choppy water and my trim set to notches back from the transom so she was nose high, but i did notice better accelleration with the govenor off. Also my mixture was a little rich 22litters to 1 liter of mix, the guy before me said he ran it 50to1 but I mixing it 24 to 1 or tried to. Should I still mix it 24 to 1 or go 50 because many people are saying the oils are better now a days? There is only one tank because the 35 came with a fuel pump on it stock but get this it doesn't have a generator so nothing is charging the battery i guess they were a dealer option so should i trickle charge it when not in use? Also where is a good anchor point on my boat, my buddy put it on the very front pull hook and its hard to get to on my boat can I mount to the rear of my boat loops?

thanks :)

Re: Thinking of getting a boat

If your carb settings are changing while at WOT then you need to tighten the packing nut that the jet goes through (7/16 size nut, I think). just a little, but tight enough to hold the jet in position.

depending on what type of battery you have and what accessories you are using while boating, you may only need to charge every other time. but till you get a feel for it, charge it every time it sits.

for the anchor cleat: it should be on the bow. Mine is mounted (factory) about half way between the very tip of the bow and my windshield. it needs to be on the front end (bow) portion of the boat, because in that position the boat is able to take the waves the best. any other spot on the boat could swamp it.

Re: Thinking of getting a boat

So thats why the guy I bought it from had a special coated chain in the boat not to scratch the top bow of the boat when he anchors, would this be right? I'll try tightening the packing on the hi jet also. Big thanks

And yes, I would always stick to 24:1 to keep it running well and long.
