This means clogged fuel tank vent?

I was putting gas in the boat today. It was at little less than 1/4 tank. When I started pumping the gas started coming back out of the fill hole. Even if I tried to go slow it would start coming back out of the fill hole and the hose.

I had checked the fuel tank vent before by blowing in it and it did not seem clogged.

So when this was going on I unhooked the tank vent hose from the transom and checked the fitting.

The fitting was clear and clean. I blew in the hose and then held my finger next to it and I could feel the air coming back out. Then I started pumping gas and it filled fine.

Does thus mean there's something in there that clogs it sometimes?

I have a smallish tank at 25 gallons. Lots of boats around my lake have bigger tanks. So the gas docks can pump some fuel fast. My fill hose was new this May, copied the original path, part and placement. It almost makes an "S". Some gas pumps back splash me and some don't. You could be in a similar "boat".

If there is a dip in your vent hose it can fill with gasoline when you fill the tank full and the next time you try to fill it, the liquid gasoline will block the vent.

Make sure your vent line goes uphill all the way from the tank to the actual vent. No dips.
