OK so I fired the motor up again tonight. It has a really neat rattling sound when it starts, I ran it for about 3 minutes then the sound magically disappeared! I thought they were just loud motors until it sounded nice and quiet. I shut it off and started up again, rattle again but went away almost right away.

Other issue, I can shift it into gear with the motor off, rotate the prop and move the flywheel. I start it up, move the shift lever and nothing. No clunk, no drop in rpm, no prop wash in the barrel, sweet F all.

This thing is a 55, there shouldn't be anything complicated here should there?

I'll assume its not a rod knock as it shouldn't go away.Perhaps the shift dog is rattling. Do to some sort of problem in the gearcase. While the lube was relatively cold the dog didn't move enough to stop the rattle once warmed
a little the dog moved enough to stop the rattle.
Did you have the shift yoke pin out? (philips head screw on the gearcase)for some reason and not get it in correctly?

No sir, I never touched anything on this motor minus the carb. If the shift yoke pin was out and not back in correctly why would the flywheel move if I shift it and move the prop by hand?
