Thoughts on LVLP Spray Guns?

I've been using my 40 year old Sears paint spray guns for many years, spraying away at 40 - 50 psi in a cloud of atomized over-spray that drifts over my makeshift "spray booth" and over the neighborhood. I've been looking at some of the more modern alternatives, but am not interested in adding yet another air supply in my crowded garage. It looks like I could adapt my existing compressor to function with HVLP - but it would be marginal at best. So, I've started looking at LVLP.

My workhorse compressor is a Dewalt, 1.8 HP, 15 gallon tank that puts out 5.4 cfm at 90 psi. Would that work reasonably well with the new LVLP guns? Amazon has an LVLP gun in the $100 range and HF has one at $14.95. Does the HF model produce acceptable results? I'd be painting maybe some woodworking products, some stuff on my boat and maybe some fabricated metal pieces.

Re: Thoughts on LVLP Spray Guns?

You have to look at the specs for each sprayer ....continious spraying at whatever cfm @90 or less....most will be around 5-6 cfm@ 90 some may op at 40 thur 60+ some alot higher depending on manufactor...can't answer your question without model and manufactor.....some can up around 10cfm @90 so check the label @ 90cfm is the key
Pro gun here check the specs link below

Re: Thoughts on LVLP Spray Guns?

I have the HF gun, but the only job I have used it on (so far) is paining an old horse trailer, in a barn.

Between my bad eyesight, low lighting, improperly prepared paint, wind and some rain, the job turned out pretty good. ;)

Some part of the trailer looked excellent and the gun seems to be built well. There was very little overspray.

IMO, in more cabable hands and better painting conditions, this gun could do a great job.

Re: Thoughts on LVLP Spray Guns?

I bought the Starting Line kit made by Devillbis from Eastwood. I found it listed on Ebay cheaper than from their magazine or website. I did have to get a good compressor in order to use the larger gun. The big gun requires 7.5 cfm @ 30 psi. I have used both guns that are in the kit. The big one I used to prim and paint a set of rims and the smaller one I used to put the finish on a bookcase I made for my wife. I'm very happy with the kit as it contains some spare parts, tool, cleaning brushes, and its case. Paid 135 with free shipping. I'm very happy with the results it gives and the items to help in cleaning the equipment up.
