Looking for a new motor for my boat, found this deal on CL. Seller claims it had a recent rebuild, it was his farther in laws who passed away. Engine looks decent and has been stored indoors.....What do you guys think? Or what questions should I ask/things should I check?

Ayuh,.... Offer 'im 1/2 what he's askin',... pretty old stuff,....

Do a compression test on the motor, 'n maybe ya get another barginin' chip,...
cold motor'll probably come in alittle low,....

If ya Need the stuff, it's a fair deal,....
At 1/2 what he's askin', it's a pretty good steal of a deal,... if ya Need the stuff,....
If ya Really Need the stuff, the motor is worth it,....

Yeah I was thinking about just bringing my own battery and jumpers in order to do at least a compression test. I NEED the motor. I have a 24ft Sunnrunner flybridge sitting in moorage right now with no engine. Im a bit of a "deal finder" and don't really have the option to just purchase a new engine etc. I'm fairly handy and capable of doing my own work, especially with the help of everyones knowledge here on the forums. Even if the motor is halfway through its life it would be a good purchase for me. As this will just be a boat used for light use in the summers. What compression should I be looking for?

Ayuh,.... Over 100 psi can be run,... at or under is a rebuildable core motor,......

Ideal is 'bout 150 psi to 180 or so,...
Over 180, it probably has oil or water in it,...

I don't think there will be a long line of folks waiting to see the engine, etc. So, I would bid low, as Bondo suggested. It could actually be a better mooring anchor than an engine.

Why not rebuild your old engine? Sbc engines are cheap to renew, plus you can buy a rebuilt off e-bay for around $1500. From what I'm seeing, there's no rebuilt engine there. My $00.02 opinion....-Rich

Do a search on e-bay for marine 5.7 engine. Sorry for the second post but my tablet would not let me edit my prior post....-Rich

Theres a local shop that has rebuilt long blocks for $1400. I guess its just hard to go half and half. Half brand new engine, half all the old junk from the old engine to complete it, then is it really that great especially if one of the old parts fails then instead of destroying a cheap used engine Ive just destroyed a brand new one......? Vs Getting a screaming deal on a running used engine, take the best parts from mine and it, to build an engine, then sell the left over stuff........

Sooo...you're going to gamble $400 on a used engine vs a new rebuilt engine? If you go with the used engine & it turnes out to be junk, you are out $1000. What parts are you worrying about that would ruin the new engine? A new water pump is $100, hoses another $100. Any suspect parts should, no must, be replaced for if no other reason, safety.

A guy contacted me via my WTB ad. He has a 1996 Volvo Penta 5.7Gi Ready to drop in minus the manifolds (which I have) 900hrs which is a bit high, but this engine should still have another 1000hrs on it if it was taken care of. Its an EFI engine and comes with the ECU and the wiring harness. Checking it out Sunday.
