So i have finished my 5.7 motor build and will be dropping in this week . I can't stop thinking about the trim pump that has a leak . Its the one mounted behind the drive on outside of boat. It appears to be the updated cover. Can get a new cover for under 500 but with pump looking at 2500. which hurts. Looking for input on diagnosing the leak which looks to be coming from the bottom of the cover. The trim works and lifts the drive up and down. How do you know if the pump is bad and causing the leak. Thanks to anyone with experience with these pumps that can give suggestions.

All of them I have seen, but that is only 4 of them. Three Cobalts with V-8s and a Monterey with a V-6. All had the SX-A.

I have replaced a couple of the pumps but can’t remember if they can be removed from the bracket without disconnecting. Tipping it out of the bracket would help with cleaning and make the leak easier to spot. A light dusting of baby power is a great way to spot a leak but the pump would have to be clean and dry first.

It was suggested to me when I asked for advice on changing my first one to cut the wires and splice in the new pump. I found it easier to disassemble the plug. The clip that holds the harness seal in the transom is a serious PITA though.

volvo lost their mind by installing the pump outside the boat on the SX-A drive. turned a $100 oildyne 108 pump to a $2500 nightmare

yes i have seen that done and i could do that but you don't have to do that if your just replacing the cover.

....unfortunately mine. 2022 Regal with a VP SX drive. The trim pump is external, tucked inside the gimal ring against the transom plate on the starboard side. My first VP, so I don't know when they moved it into the water.
When I saw it, I saw future trouble. Self contained reservoir, pump and valve body clamped in a 'water tight' clam shell enclosure.

I'm winging it here. I haven't been into mine, but I've studied the shop manual, which is at our river house. I'll get back if I get better info.
It will be a challenge since the cover is part of the oil reservoir. The cover/seal could be loose or leaking. Tighten it first and hope this fixes it.
My suggestion is then to remove the lines and cover (collect the oil). The lines should reconnect to the valve body. Clean off all oil so you can see any leaks. Fab up a funnel with a plastic hose to feed the pump's inlet with oil and have a helper run the trim. Keep the hose full. The reservoir level raises and lowers between trim up and down, so the pump will gulp oil trimming up, and puke it back trimming down. If it is a valve body or hose connection leak, hopefully you will see it and be able to fix it.
If no leaks, suspect the cover and seal. Other FB groups have discussed leaks. Some suggest a good hull cleaning and a bead of RTV to extra seal the cover/housing.

Edit: It looks like the pump assembly has a sealed fluid reservoir. So looking for leaks could be easier if the assembly can be removed with just the cover attaching screws. The electric control cable has a reusable seal grommet that may allow you to pull the unit out far enough to check for leaks.
