I've helicoiled all the bolt holes for the lower unit for the original bolts and coated all the bolt threads with aviation gasket.<br /><br />I am now experiencing the new and satisfying sensation of bolts that can be tightened. Actually, the fact that a couple of them don't fall out under gravity is more than enough to make me happy.<br /><br />Having spent Xmas-New Year a couple of years ago dragging a deep silt creek for a gearcase that fell off an old British Seagull I was playing with which had stripped gearcase holes (which like this one was the way I got the motor), I'm keen to avoid another gearcase falling off.<br /><br />Thanks everyone for your help. It's a lot better first to try out ideas here with people who know what they're talking about than experiment on the motor and find out the hard way that my idea was wrong. Especially as it's going to drop the gearcase in 50 feet of dark water if it happens.
