Re: Three Wire Rectifier
The 3 wire rectifier is like the 4 wire rectifier but instead of a ground wire, the whole rectifier is grounded. The other 3 wires are the AC in which are yellow wires and the red wire is the DC out or positive DC.
There are also 3 phase rectifiers with 3 yellow wires and 1 red wire.
RECTIFIER CHECK
a. CAUTION: Shut off engine and disconnect battery
before checking rectifier.
Use ohmmeter - High ohm scale.
b. Disconnect rectifier leads.
c. Connect one ohmmeter probe to common engine
ground, other probe to one yellow lead. Note the readings.
d. Reverse probes - note readings again.
e. You should have one high and one zero reading on the meter - diode ok.
f. Repeat test using the other yellow rectifier lead and
same values.
g. If both readings on one yellow lead are high -
diode is open - Replace Rectifier.
h. If both readings on one yellow lead are zero -
diode shorted - Replace Rectifier.
i. Repeat test procedures between rectifier red lead
and to each yellow lead. Use same test values.
Good Luck
