Throtle link and timing advance? '98 Rude 50SPL

I have a '98 Evinrude model E50TSLECC. I have had issues with the engine not running in gear at idle speed. I have discovered that the cam roller and throttle roller were both worn/damaged. I have repaired them both. Checking everything over, I have discovered that when I shift the motor into gear, I do not get any movement in the cam lever or spark lever until a good bit past the idle detent. Once the cam lever actually moves, the spark lever and the throttle cam move instantly. When the throttle lever is moved back to idle, it stays in a position with the spark lever and throttle cam advanced. When look at BRP website, I noticed they show two different throttle cables. I am thinking this is an error, however, I was curious about whether or not the throttle cable should be in the upper or lower hole in the cam lever. Any ideas about whether I should move the throttle cable up or not? Also, shouldn't the cam lever and spark lever both advance as the motor is shifted into gear. It seems as though the motor will run fine once you move the throttle up from idle, however, it is turing to many rpm's by that time and can be a bear when docking or trailering the boat. Thanks for any help!

no the linkage does not move when you shift into gear. that is the reason you idle speed has to be finally fine tune, with the boat & motor in the water, and in gear. the motor has to idle in gear. the motor will idle a little faster in neutral, than in gear. as to the rest of your question, pictures would surely help.

Thanks for the reply. I will try to post some pics later today. I had replaced the cam follower roller the last time out, but have not ran motor since replacing throttle roller. Seeing as ole man winter has decided to leave us alone for now, I may try to run this weekend. Do you have any suggestions on the best way to adjust the idle speed?

I adjusted the shift linkage and got the cam lever to respond much quicker. That and the slightest adjustment to the idle speed screw and the motor will shift from neutral into idle and sit there and purr like a kitten getting its belly rubbed. Thanks for the answers, they sent me in the right direction.

Good luck as in they are a motor that takes a lot of care, or are they like the 48SPL's that are much more bullet proof? I have got this 50 on a 16' 1984 Bonito that needs some work(raised front casting deck, floor,& side consoles).
The transom has recently been reworked, so I have that much going for me. I would love dearly to get me a nice pontoon boat to put this motor on, but would want to know this motor will be around with proper care and maintenance. I have rebuilt the carbs, checked the compression, replaced plugs, serviced water pump, serviced lower foot, and then worked with the idle issue since my wife bought this boat for us last Valentines day.
