Throttle cable throw wrong.

I've got what I'm guessing is a late 80's / early 90's 25hp Yamaha outboard that is set up for both tiller and remote control. I can't be exact on the year, as the data plate is gone. :( The number in the freeze plug is 007868, which does me no good in google. Maybe one of you knows how to identify it better?

Anyway, I am putting it on a custom built 11' single seat speed boat. Before thinking too much of it, I ordered a Teleflex Osprey (CH1700) side mount control thinking it would work fine. However now that I am fitting the all the hardware prior to painting the hull I discovered that the control box produces about 2 3/8" of cable throw for the throttle. However the lever on the engine only moves 1 1/2" from idle to WOT. As far as I can tell there is no way to adjust the ammount of cable throw at the control...or on the engine for that matter. The ammount of throw for the shifter seems to be perfect though?

Does anyone know what it is that I may be missing / doing wrong; or am I just stuck using one of those ugly 701 controls?

TIA!
