~~Hi new to the board and also new to me bass boat owner.
'89 85hp Force o/b. Took her out for the 1st time yesterday. Off the dock reversed with no issues, try to put it in fwd and she stalled. Did this a few times. Then after engaging the gear trigger I hucked it really fast to about 1/2 throttle and she didn't stall......is this normal?? even after the engine was warmed up and we moved spots she started like a dream, went in reverse again no issues.....fwd stalled and continued to stall unless I threw her to 1/2 throttle then backed her down.
Thanks for any help in advance!!

It's interesting that it only stalls in forward but not in reverse. Logic tells me this is because it carries more load going forward (as the prop is designed to do so) which cold mean your idle rpm is too low or your air-fuel mixture screws are not set correctly. In addition to checking the set idle rpm properly, make sure the air-fuel mix screws are also set properly, 1 full turn up to 1 1/8 turn out from slight seated. This should be set on all carbs. You cannot miss the idle mixture screw as it is the only brass screw with a spring on it on the carb. Note, if you have not done this let us know to discuss the details. But basically, all it requires is to screw it in slowly until you start to feel resistance (meaning the needle part of the screw is already seating in or closing. NOTE: DO NOT FORCE IT IS AT IT CAN DAMAGE THE SEAT OR NEEDLE POINT). Stop and then turn CCW to one full turn or up to 1 1/8 turn out.

Mine also did the same thing when firing her up this year.So..how do I find out what the rpms are without a tach?

No can do. Since knowing the RPM's is vital to solve most running problems, a tach is a wise investment. Tiny tach is an inexpensive start.

Not to e rude, but Luckyman1 needs to start his own thread instead of hijacking one.

My "mechanically inclined" rating is about a .7 out of 10. but have a friend who is a mechanic, hes coming over next week to check it out. I will keep posting if any positive or negative results happen.

Ok so I found the idle set screw and turned it up 200 RPM now she idles at 1200 RPM and goes into frwd/reverse very smoothly with no stalling. Now im dealing with the water pump lol.......parts are in just need to replace the gaskets and the impeller!!

Great. However, be careful how you set your idle rpm. You should try to get the lowest possible rpm in neutral that when placed in gear will not stall the motor. Too high of idle rpm can easily be detected by two things. The clutch dogs are constantly grinding before engaging and second it jerks the boat a little bit as soon as the gear engages. If any of these things happen, you need to lower you rpm a little but not to the point it stalls. This will prevent premature wear out of the clutch dogs. Remember be a little snappy when engaging gear and NEVER EASE ON IT.
