Throttle Friction

I have a 2009 Carolina Skiff 16 JVX Center Console with a 2009 Honda BF50. Problem is with the throttle. It is VERY stiff. There is a stainless steel friction adjustment screw on the front of the throttle control box. Turning the screw counterclockwise (or clockwise) has no affect on stiffness of the throttle. Any ideas?

you need to find where its binding at.

disconnect the cable from the motor linkage and see if its free and that will tell you where its binding.

if the cable is still stiff disconnect it from the controls and check if its the cable, it might be the cable and often is but it could be corrosion in the control box

That's almost always a stiff cable. Disconnect it from the control and see if the control lightens up. Disconnect it from the drive and shift the drive manually and see if that is easy. If both of those are true, it is a stiff cable that needs replaced.

Check the cable and if it is the cable that is stiff, try to lube it before you replace it. I have found that old, dried up grease in a cable will cause them to be stiff at times.

Like already mentioned, disconnect the cables at the motor and move the shifter (try it in throttle-only as well) to find the source of the problem.

It is very likely that the control cables are stiff and need to be replaced. They are not that expensive and in my experience its not usually worth it to try to grease up stiff old cables. Sometimes you can find a chafed spot in on of the cables that is the culprit, but even if they look pretty good on the outside they can still be bad. on your Carolina skiff, replacing control cables probly wont be too extremely difficult. while you are replacing them you will get a good look at the inside of the control box as well, and can grease if necessary.

MIKE any grease in a cable will make it stiff. Control cables are NOT to be lubed at all, if cable is stiff it is ALWAYS worn.
Check in to haw cables are made and you will see.

Cr2k, I have ran into a couple cables on used boats that people have lubed with some kind of grease, and they were stiff, I cleaned them, they were fine after. I do lube my cables, at the motor end where they are exposed with a cleaner/lube, it prevents corrosion in the salty world my boats live in, and never had a problem. It could also be bound up/routed wrong. So, stiff cables are NOT always worn. And after spending my whole life on boats, rebuilding a few, and also being an ASE Master tech before joining the military, I do know how a cable is made. Maybe you should take a couple apart and check out the lube they have on them from the factory...
