I have a 90 hp Mariner on a 16 ft Ring skiboat in the United Kingdom. The problem is with the remote control throttle gearshift handle (with power trim and tilt). The engine is approx 12 years old with very low hours use.
The gearshift lever assembly can be seen here:

http://www.mercruiserparts.biz/partsimages/QS/41573.94A/9.gif

The problem is that within the upright part of the combination handle, a red plastic slider (13 on the diagram) that allows forward or reverse gear to be engaged, is being allowed to "ride up" along with the rest of the handle, by about 1". Unless physical pressure is lightly applied down on the combination handle, the plastic slider will not allow forward or reverse to be selected. The only thing stopping the handle riding up further is the wiring loom for the power trim and tilt button. From the diagram there is a grub screw (12) that secures the plastic outer part of the handle to the metal inner part, that must lock the handle down and keep the intergrated parts of the handle together as a unit. The problem is I can not see any sign of this grub screw or an aperture for its location.
Is there a simple explanation for this that a member has come across in the past ? Thankyou for reading this message and I look forward to any replies with anticipation.
Richard Barry
