What should be connected to the grounding block in the bottom of the bilge/hull in a power boat? Someone told me not to connect the electrical system ground to it, that the electrical system should ground to the negative battery terminal. Is the purpose of that ground for lightning?

The block actually penetrates the hull? Fiberglass boat?

I?m not 100% sure it actually penetrates the hull. It is a fiberglass boat and their is a green wire connecting the grounding block inside the bilge to the negative terminal on the battery. Is that right?

Its to be connected to anything that can be a lightning rod.

ie: stern light, windshield frame, etc.

I supose you could run it through the negitive side of the battery too, But its to allow lightning to pass through the boat with out hittiing anything important, like you!

The block should have something that passes through the hull to the outside that resides below the waterline.

That would make sense, a lightning ground, hmmm. In that case I wouldn't run any battery ground to there. Re-locate the wire from your bilge to a ground on the motor or - battery terminal. If it is indeed for lightning you would want to run wiring to locations as T-O stated.
