Hi, I just bought a 96 vip 19ft. and have a few questions. First of all i brought the boat back and yanked the motor to check everything out and make sure everything was in top condition. I was wondering since ive got it out already if anyone has installed a thru hull exhaust system on a 4.3l v6? if so does it sound any good at all? also im wondering what i would have to do to install a thru hull exhaust? do i need to buy anything special? is it as simple as running pipe straight off and back from the risers to the hull? also ive read a few posts about a thru hull exhaust conversion and people keep talking about the transom.. what is the transom? also im wondering since ive got the motor out if theres anything anyone would recomend doing for additional performance? thanks

Welcome aboard

Dont think I have ever heard a 4.3 with above the water line exhaust.

As far a performance most of your restiction is in the manifolds and risers you probably wont get enough hp gain with thru hull feal in the seat.

If you have a carb a new intake, better carb and slightly hotter cam would be your best hp per $.

You haft to be carefull with the cam as with water cooled exhaust to much valve overlap and it will suck water in the cyl. witch doesnt end well.

Good luck

The transom is the back end of the boat.

A buddy of mine had a mid 80s 4Winns with a v6, and thru hull exhaust, and NO, it doesnt sound as good as an V8, never will. If you are planning on it, I would put on a choice system, I wouldnt want it open all the time. His, also was above the water line. He got alot of tickets too, not all waters are legal to run loud open exhaust.

There are very few V6's in this world that are "pleasing to the ear" with an open exhaust. The GM 4.3L V6 isn't one of them, nor is any other generic 6-cylinder that spins less than 6K rpms. Leave the thru-hull exhaust for the V8's, it doesn't add any HP to the V8's anyway, it's just for show/sound until you get up around the 500HP range when it does affect performance.

Ayuh,... I did it to my barge, 'bout 12/ 15 years ago,...
I've been tryin' to quite it down ever since...

If ya like the sound of a fart in a mitten, or the sound of a little Cessna plane flyin' overhead,...
That's what it sounds like...
Right up there with a farm tractor, with no muffler....
And,...
There's absolutely No performance increase,... Just an irritating noise...

I've got it on my Sea Ray with a 5.7 and can stand about 5 minutes of it before I'm ready to shut it down. My 4 year old grandson calls it "going redneck". Even when switching to the thru the prop exhaust, there is still some that "leaks" through the upper ports. If I had it to do over again I would have bought without it.

i did it to a 5.0 volvo. it sounded great durring several times; when launching, cruising and coming out of the whole. Kinda gives you that "miami vice" feeling! other than that it got pretty annoying real quick! its really hard to hold a conversation in the boat while in motion and ruins any family time. its also damn near impossible to hear each other when doing any water sports.

IMO only consider it with an option to turn it off like captains call or silent choice

You really need a 454 big block engine to get the full effect of thru-hull exhausts . . .

Re: thru hull exhaust & performance questions

I actually was on the water this past year in Dale Hollow and pulled up to a guy that had the same boat I had but the motor was a tad bit louder than mine. To be honest, the way it sounded like a "miss" in a V8, then I asked if he needed a tow, he said no. I then asked him about what year it was because the only difference between mine and his were the graphics. He had a 97 with a Vortec 4.3LX and just had the thru-hull exhaust done by the marina at about $750.00. He said he didn't notice a difference in anything and now it sounds just like everyone says. I thought it compared to my gas powered weed eater on full throttle on "crack"! Glad I heard it and talked to him... I was able to save my money, since I was leaning towards doing the same thing.

Nope,... but it was an ole sayin' my Grama Bond used to use...

Thanks guys for your insight on this matter. I just purchased my first boat, a Larson LXI 228 with a 350 Mag MPI, and was thinking of doing the same thing to boost the horse power a little. Since all you guys say that it does not do this, it makes my decision a lot easier. Its great to have a forum in which you can talk to experienced boaters.

Thanks!
