Just a quick question;
I have a 5.7L 350c.i. Bravo Xl with a Bravo II drive, is there any benefit to installing a thru hull pick-up for the raw water pump ? Also , it is a closed cooling system. Is it worth the work ?
Thanks !

Thru-hull pick ups are better then outdrive but most stern drive installers don't use them. They are more expensive to install which also requires a sea strainer. Open or closed system will benefit but usually not be enough to off set the cost.

Ayuh,.... It also complicates runnin' the motor, while on the hard,...

Standard water Muffs won't work,...

Ya either need a special water feed fittin', or plumb into the system a hose feed fittin',...

If the boat is ran or sits in salt water most of it's life, there sometimes comes a need that you may want to switch over to a thru-hull raw water pickup due to there are times that the bravo water pick up passage tube at the transom assembly has been known to become severely blocked due to corrosion in the passage causing the rubber grommet to be crushed inward thus overheating the engine at higher RPM.

If that happens, you have three choices, A New Transom Assembly, thru-hull raw water pickup, or a new kit to rebuild the bravo water passage seen here. I go by the motto "If you can't break it don't fix it" Wait... no it's "If you can't fix it don't break it" No that's not it either. How about "If advice from some boat forum causes it to break then be happy it didn't sink"

It is different... but I wouldn't agree it is complicated. All you have to do is remove the top of the strainer and put a hose in. Voila' - done!

I put a thru hull and strainer in the Sportcraft I used to own. It is pretty straightforward. If you do, be sure to put a valve (sea ****) on the fitting and use a quality strainer.

Here's a pic of my setup - showing the top off the strainer and the hose for flushing:
