Re: thunderbolt 500 please help with gear adjustments

I have the nut pretty much in the same place as your picture, you can see it in pic number one. The nut that's a little higher in the same picture is what I have set up to change gear with. The nut is attached to a rod (you can barely see it because of all the stuff in the way), this rod moves on the rail where the cables are attached, and the other end where the nut is attached goes straight to the shift rod, you can see it better in the third picture. I've looked on top side and bottom, and I can't find anything that remotely looks like a detent.

I found a part number 53889, punched it on ebay and it returned the exact shift rod I have.

The rotation in service is CCW from Forward through Neutral to Reverse, then CW from Reverse through Neutral to Forward.

Using finger pressure only

Forward: Prop will turn (ratchet) CW but not CCW
Neutral: Prop will turn freely in either direction
Reverse: Prop will not turn in either direction except for gear mesh.

Gerry

Side note: This helped me significantly tonight. Traded for a boat that only had forward gear...now I've found reverse and neutral. Thanks for the info !!

Gerry is a very knowledgeable person in this field! I wish I would've found this site 6 month ago, it would've saved me a few headaches!

Don;

Presuming that your engine is a longshaft version (is it?), you should have p/n 25172A1, the same shaft as I have in my 1968. 25162A1 is the short shaft version

The one you have in at present is for much later s/ns and models.

All I can think is that the original shaft broke from corrosion and someone has replaced it with the wrong one.

Re: thunderbolt 500 please help with gear adjustments

Gerry,

Would you happen to know anyone in my area that might have a shaft like that along with the spring? I would also need a stator, flywheel and rectifier, the flywheel I have on it right now is not original either.

Thanks for your help it's appreciated,

Don

Don;

I am sorry but I have no idea of what area you are in. Most of the stuff you have listed above will require you to take the p/ns from the parts listing and go searching on the net.
