Thunderbolt IV sensor replacement

1986 Alpha 1 w Thunderbolt IV ignition. I'm trying to replace the sensor in the distributor. I removed the two screws and disconnected the wires. I can jiggle it around, but can't get it out of the distributor housing. The distributor shaft is in the way. Do I have to take the distributor out? Shop manual implies it's easy. Is there a trick I'm missing?

Thanks!

You did pull the rotor and reluctor off first right?

After you got the 2 screws out, that's it, it just comes out. You may have to knock it if it's corroded in.

Those are easier to change than a set of Prestolite points!

Honest, guys, I'm not kidding. I can rattle it around in there, but can't get it up and out. The more or less rectangular part of the plastic base (with the electrical studs) protrudes outward too much to clear the distributor housing. The base bumps into the shaft.

I'm not a professional, but I think I'm a fairly accomplished driveway mechanic. I look at the picture in the manual and say this should be simple, but when I try it it just won't work.

It's night time now, but I'll take a fresh look in the morning.

Thanks for your prompt replies and I wonder if anyone else has walked in my moccasins.

Take a deep breath and a good night sleep... hit it again in the morning... good things come to fresh eyes.

Got it out. Had to use a small pry bar. New one is 1/8" smaller. I'm not the first person to have this problem.

Thanks for your comments.
