My daughter got a ticket will driving in LA. The offence was staying in the left lane too long!! according to her, she was on the left lane trying to overtake a truck and she was going at the speed limit but the truck on the right lane did not slow down nor did she speed up to over take. An undercover highway police was right at her tail and after about 3 or 4 minutes on the left lane he turn on the light and pull her over and gave her a ticket for being in the left lane too long. Is there a law about being on the left lane for a certain amount of time in Louisiana. That sucks!! :(

Wow! there's obviously a law but how long is maybe depend on the leo's judgement. You rarely hear about people getting ticket for this. That dude must have had a bad day. What he should have done was ticket the truck instead since the truck was above the speed limit.

Their law is similar to the Texas law about left lane for passing only in certain zones.

Here they will (unofficially) permit up to 15mph over the limit in order to expedite passing. . . particularly big trucks that slow a lot on grades. . .but they will bust you for "blocking" the passing lane.

3 or 4 minutes doesn't seem like long unless you have only about a mile to pass a truck or three and some other driver is in the passing lane doing the limit.

I suspect that the cop wanted to go a lot faster and she delayed him.

the way it is here in Co.

if she was pacing the truck not passing, guilty. the officer must have felt like the truck was going the speed limit to and she was driving not passing. and you stated the truck didn't slow down. why should he???

Why do you say he was speeding?

Sounds like they were both doing the speed limit.

why would she want to drive next to a truck for 3-4 minutes? in front or behind, but not on the side of one.

It is a very new law........this year's law, I believe.
It is really annoying for someone to drive right beside another vehicle, effectively blocking the highway. However, being a new law you would think a warning and short lecture might be in order.

Re: Ticketed in Louisiana

As Jbjenning said, it's law that was passed this year. I'm glad they did.

"Keep right unless passing". If she was going the same speed as the truck she should have either slowed down and tucked in behind it or went on around it.

Same thing they used to teach in driver's ed back in the 60's and 70's, maybe it's been out of style for awhile.

I'm assuming the speed limit for semi-truck is lower then passenger vehicle. Unless, in LA there's no different.

Anyway... damage is done. if she contest the ticket, what are the chances that she would win the case. Or is it better to pay the ticket and go on with life and be a little bit wiser while driving in LA.

maybe she was on the cell phone and found riding beside the truck a nice place to chat....People on the phone (not saying she was) tend to not notice cars behind them who need to go by......

THis is just my opinion........
For an out-of-stater to consider contesting a ticket is probably not the best bet----if only due to the fact that you would probably spend more time and money showing up to contest it than the ticket is worth. Also, what would be the basis for the contestation?
It's one of those "learning experiences" that one pays dearly for!!:(

She'd have to convince a traffic court judge that she was not guilty.
Might be difficult to do since the officer likely wrote a detailed report of the incident and the officer and the report he/she wrote would be in court to give their side.
I'd say if she really did cxommit the offense, her chances of winning in court would be very slim. And if LA's traffic court is like ours, it's at least two trips to court if it goes as far as a trial.

I'm assuming the speed limit for semi-truck is lower then passenger vehicle. Unless, in LA there's no different.

They still have slower speed limits for trucks in 10 states, LA just became one of them.

I haven't seen that in many years. Most states in fly over country don't do that. Kind of surprised TX is one that does.

Several studies have shown that semi/auto accidents are 2:1 auto at fault.
Other studies show that lowered semi speed limits actually cause accidents, usually because the car drivers misjudge the slower speed of the semi, or they make poor decisions in passing the truck.

There was an outcry over the trucks using the center and left lane in the Milwaukee Metro area a few years ago.

Some local politicians were calling for a new law to restrict them to the right lane. A local radio station was broadcasting the news conference, then took phone calls on the air; the word spread quickly.

It didn't take an hour before all the trucks on the interstate pulled over to the right lane, slowed to 52 mph, and effectively shut down 2 interstates, one bypass, and one US highway. No one could use the right lane to exit, and few cars could enter the freeway. Traffic crawled, onramps were backed up onto the surface roads.
3 hours later, the trucks moved over and traffic rolled once again.

The idea of lane restrictions and lowered speed limits for semi's was dropped like a hot potato, and the politicians calling for the new laws were left with egg on their face.

I know some states have lower limits for vehicles with trailers, but never seen them enforced or obeyed.

Basically, if you are in the left lane and there is someone on your butt, you need to get over to the right lane, NOW. I wish the police would cite more people for this dangerous and potentially deadly act of driving ignorance. In fact, I wish they would make cruising in the left lane a felony act. Subject to immediate arrest and possible shooting if you don't pull over soon enough for the police. o.k. maybe that's a little far, but you get my drift, I don't like people who clog up the left lane. I myself could be doing 90 in the left lane and if someone comes up behind me, I get over to the right ASAP....never know, might be a cop.....

That's funny. Here in AZ we joke about left lane riders invariably having Texas plates. I guess they come here just to experience it.:D

Most states have "slower vehicles keep right" or similar laws, for many years.

http://www.mit.edu/~jfc/right.html

You can bet big trucks will get ticketed in that situation.

I drive a big truck and for some reason, I never have "nappers", in the lane to the left of my rig. ;)

Re: Ticketed in Louisiana

In Ohio some areas are 55 for trucks and 65 for cars, some areas have a max gorse vehicle weight speed limits. Also a slower vehicles keep right in all areas, but at no time can you excide the speed limit to pass. I have received a ticket for it so unless they changed that in the last 6 years its still the same. So if the vehicle in front of you is doing the speed limit you are stuck. There is also a 3 vehicle limit on passing before you have to merge right for a distance. The left lane is for over taking slower vehicles and for emergency vehicles only. In up state New York its all 65 on the high way and 55 for and state roads. No tolerance policy in both states.

In short if you are going to travel through a state that you are not familiar with you can find the laws on there DMV/BMV sight. A few minutes spent reading up could save a few hundred.

Is this reverent to the OP not really but it may be good info to have.
