Anybody know of any type of paint that would be suitable for bathroom wall tile? It is also in the shower so it will be in a wet area. We only have one bathroom so a complete remodel is out of the question right now. I can't take this 1950's pink decor much longer.

Re: tile paint

Are these the plastic pink tiles that populated my parents' bathroom before I redid it 10 years ago (complete with matching fixtures and contrasting brown vynil floor tile) or ceramic?<br /><br />I've seen many attempts, some very honest and diligent, at getting paint to stick to tiles inside a shower area. None have survived much more than a year. You might consider a tub surround as a solution there.

STL----I have been mulling over your dilemma and have a possible solution.<br /><br />I believe you could purchase some "porcelain paint."I have heard of it being used on stoves, reefers and tubs.I have not used it myself but if you question the helpful folks at Lowe's or Home Depot or Menard's maybe they could confirm the possibility.<br /><br />GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Re: tile paint

The only only thing you can do is either hire some body to do it ,it is a lenghty prossess to do own your own the tile has to be cleaned with an acid base cleaner do deglaze then an apoxy primer and then to coats of epoxy paint .we just had 2 showers done last year it was a whole lot cheaper than a remodel and without the mess, the epoxy paint you by to do it yourself will not hold up been there done that, good luck

Re: tile paint

Ron G is on it.<br /><br />What is the reason for not a remodel, cost or because of the 1 bathroom?<br /><br />My opinion:<br />If it's cost, for around $100 you can get the 3 piece fiberglass pieces that cover existing tile, goes flush with the top of the tub, just need some silicone to install, ready to use the next day.<br /><br />If it's because it's the only bathroom, painting is going to nock it out of commision longer than a full re-make.<br /><br />You can completely gut and re-build a bathroom in under 3 days, a long weekend and you can do it. Even re-install the toilet each night.

Re: tile paint

I like the idea of the three peice fiberglass for the tub surround. The problem is that the tile goes a little more than half way up the wall, and surrounds the entire bathroom. There is also a window in the shower. I try to do most of my home improvement projects myself but I am a little scared of this one. I have been told by several people that to try to take out those old tiles would be a nightmare. They have told me that a large chunck of masonry would come off with each tile. Then it would be new drywall and then new tile all the way around. This seems to me that the can and the shower would be out of comission for quite some time. Has anybody worked with this type of tile before.

Re: tile paint

yes ive redone 2 and am onanother one now more than likle the best thing is to take sledge hammer and go to it behind the tile is wire mesh and a mortar will be 1" to 1.5" thick take all tile out pull tub out install new sinirion tub then hang green sheetrock if you want tile you can just tile around the tub, install durock around the tub over top of green board install tile they make c bullnoise cap that goies around the edge give it a rounded clean look, also a window in the shower is a no no it will hold water from showere splash and eventually cause rot alot of our houuses have them so while were doing a remodel we pull it out to just for preventive maint. good luck, also is the floor tile?still like in the originally it may be cheaper to have epoxyed painted by some one that does it.but its no big deal to do on your own you can do it if you have the time .

Re: tile paint

I am planning on tiling a tub surround myself. I found a lot of good advice here about tiling. I personally think you will be happier with new tile or a fiberglass or platic surround. If new tile is what you want I would take a sledge and take it all down to the studs, install a vapor barrier if required and then install some of the backer/concrete board then tile away. I talked to a friend of mine who lays tile for a living and he said it could be done in a weekend start to finish.<br /><br /> Good luck

Re: tile paint

I love how every time I try to half-ars something, someone talks me out of it and makes me do it the right way. I am doubtfull about being completed in one weekend. If this is true I would be willing to go for the complete remodel. I would not be able to hire a contractor secondary to expense, but might be able to get a few buddies over to help. Ill check out the link above, and if anybody knows of any other sites that might help, I would appreciate it. Any other comments or suggestions would be great.

Re: tile paint

One thing you could do during the remodel to keep the tub usable is to hang plastic sheeting over the tile. You would be essentially be making a 4 wall shower curtain. If you kept the water pressure low enough and took quick showers you could get away with it. <br /><br />You would still want to be cautious with this approach after you set the tiles and after you grout, but you could time it pretty well. <br /><br />Although I have never tiled a shower, I tried to take the easy way out on a bathroom floor and used self sticking vinyl squares. Got about 4 down and decided it would look really nasty. Went with real tile and it was worth the work and $$$.

I guarantee if you offer some free food and some beverages... <br />"MMmmmm Beeeeeerrr"<br /> Homer Simpson<br />...That you could get plenty of help. Also keep in mind that more the one person might be hard to turn around in a bathroom let alone be productive. I plan on getting my shower surround tiled this weekend, so I know you can do it. :) <br />Good Luck
