Tilt and Trim Motor

Hi Guys,
I have a tilt and trim motor on 150HP Force, it worked fine but all of the sudden it just started clicking without doing anything. I can hear the click in the outboard but nothing on the motor on the tilt. I took it apart and found the magnet in the electric motor in pieces. Not sure how it happened but I am hoping this is what the problem is. I have added pictures, do any of you guys think and the same and do you know if I can only by the magnet or do I have to buy the whole motor.

The bushings have worn out allowing the armature to hit the magnets. you may be able to replace the bushings and get some more use out of it.

Thanks for the quick reply, could you a bit more specific please. Sorry not familiar with this at all. What bushings, where are they located and when you say get more life out of it do you mean on the same motor? where could i get a new magnet.

It's pretty common for rust to get inside and cause the magnet to come loose and hit the armature. Moisture gets inside either from the grommet around the wires that goes inside, or the seal around the cap and or seals under screw heads that hold it together leaking. Once they get rusted like this, they're usually toast. You can try and disassemble and remove all the rust, and epoxy the magnet back in place, if the magnet has in fact come loose. Check to make sure the bronze or brass bearings (bushings) in the cap and the lower portion do not have excessive play in them.

I took that coil out and the magnet fell apart I am thinking because the magnet was in pieces that the coil would not spin and that is why it would not work. Could I just buy the upper part of the motor with the coil. or just the magnet perhaps and where.

it's not worth fixing. even if you fix the magnet you still haven't gotten rid of the rust or fixed the leak that caused the rust. you can buy a new one for $130.

google shopping, iboats, amazon, ebay. All of the no-name trim motors under $200 come from the same Taiwan factory. Just search for cheapest price.

ARCO is the best overall quality and will last 2x as long but you won't find it for under $200. The determining factor is lifespan of engine. The chinese stuff is a 3-7 year solution. The Arco stuff is a 10-20 year product. A proper reman is as good as arco, but your motor is probably not a candidate. By the time rust pops magnet off of frame the armature shaft is usually pitted.

General rule of thumb for rebuilds is:
do not rebuild the motor if it has 2 out of 3 expensive repairs -
1) rust behind magnets or windings
2) pitted armature or bad bearings
3) needs new rush cap

Thats not arco. That uis the Taiwan special.

ARCO is the gold standard. If it is a genuine ARCO then they will show you a clear picture of the "ARCO" label mounted directly on the motor.

Hello everybody, I have the issue with my tilt motor. I bought a new one, Sierra # 18-6754, omc 382138. Have not install yet. My question is when removing the holding nuts on the bolts the ends seem to be loose. Does not seem to be very weather tight for the elements sea air and what not. Can I put some gasket sealer the ends before replacing back on the boat? And if the seal on the electric shift cable port through hole goes, the motor will get soaked with water and probably be toast in know time.

Any input will help thanks

its not the right motor for a force. maybe it is an OMC trim motor that goes in bilge or engine compartment and isn't even supposed to get wet.
