I have 95 Johnson 88HP and the tilt and trim will not work When I engage switch their is a clicking sound at the engine area. Are their any suggestions what the problem could be. I have not checked the fluid since their has been no sign of leakage. It seems to be a electrical problem. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Terry

Re: Tilt and trim not working

Sounds like the T/T relays are working as evidenced by the clicking sound you hear.Either the wiring from the relay to the T/T motor is not making due to corrosion or bad connection or the T/T motor itself is defective.Try checking all of the wiring connections on the relays first by removing the engine cover and inspecting. If the engine is in the down position, you'll need to back off on the manual release screw ,accesible through a hole in the transom bracket, and lift the engine manually until you can flip the trailing lock to secure it.Then, you can get a looksee at the T/T motor and inspect the wiring or perform a 12v jumper test to check for operation.Good luck and tell us what you find.

PS, You may need an assistant to help raise the engine manually.

ob, Thanks for your reply. I checked the wiring it looks ok, however did not do the 12v jumper test (don't know how to perform this test). I did remove the filler plug on t/t and it may be low, I did not see no fluid, are their any type fluid beside the Johnson brand to use? Thanks in advance for the information.

If the wires that are attached to the relay switch box have never been cleaned, then there is a good chance that you are only getting partial
connectivity. This "clicking" has happened to me several times. Cleaning the backs of the contacts has cured the problem. Sometimes if you tilt the engine too far down, the tilt system will shut down and will not operate until the
system resets itself.

Iv,e played this game myself several times.

You have a poor electrical connection somewhere. Check that you are getting a good earth to the relays and check that the battery terminals are in good condition. Sounds simple, but it was true in my case.

TerryL50,
Does the motor run in one direction? If so try swapping the solenoids, and see if the motor runs in the other direction.
In your system,I believe, the up solenoid supplies battery + for up,while the down solenoid supplies battery -.Just the reverse for down.
You may just have a bad solenoid.

DHP
