tilt and trim wont go up

I recently purchased a used boat with a 40 hp evinrude E40TTLCCS,I have been having trouble with the tilt and trim, it goes down fine but when I push the button to lift the motor the tnt motor runs but it wont go up unless I assist it? no visible leaks please help!

Does it go up though, just slowly? First thing id check is the fluid lever in the resevoir.

Also check the manual release valve.

Could be the manual release valve is cracked open a bit, I'm more inclined to think you just need more fluid. Make sure you have motor tilted up all the way when you add it, then cycle it up and down a few times and check it again. Motor's an 88 model, it's definately due.

the previous owner gave me a bottle of hydraulic fluid is that the right stuff? or Ive heard to use ATF

Run to your nearest dealer or marina, they'll set you up with the proper OMC stuff

I had the exact same problem on the same make/size motor Sparky.
Definitely check the fluid level, that was my problem.
