Tilt issue

I didn't have a battery in the boat but had a battery charger handy so I jumped power to the engine. It did trim up but very slowly. Now the engine will not trim up. I hear the relay clicking. Down works fine.

Looks to me like the wiring for the relays is as follows.

N - power from switch
S - Power from Battery
E - To trim Motor
W - Ground

When the switch is pressed the E post does show 12V.

Did I smoke the motor?

Re: Tilt issue

pull the green and blue wire off the relays that go to the trim motor and touch them to a good battery, reverse the wires at the battery to see if it works both up and down, If that works then the motor is fine

Re: Tilt issue

did you pull both wires off and touch them to the battery blue + and green -.

And then reverse which ones were touching the battery posts + & - posts?

You have to do both wires for this check

Re: Tilt issue

Pulled them off one at a time and connected them directly to the Battery.

Green moved the engine down, blue did nothing.

Re: Tilt issue

Could be the relay or a ground doing it that way. That is why I said to pull both at same time and hook to battery

If I do that wont the two be fighting against each other?

Re: Tilt issue

You only touch one wire to each post, how can that be a problem?
Is this a 2 wire motor or something else

Not sure, can't see the motor but here is a Google result for a replacement motor.

I did not figure one would be + while the other was - I figured that the motor got a ground through the chassis and + was fed through one wire or the other depending on which way it was supposed to go.

Tomorrow I'll disconnect both and clip a multi meter to the posts that they came off of + to green and - to blue. Then push the switch up and down and see what the meter says.

Re: Tilt issue

If it is a 2 wire, the way you change directions of a DC motor is to reverse the polarity on the wires. try it it should work. you probably have a relay problem , but could be a bad ground connection

OK if I disconnect the Blue and Green wires, put + to green and - to blue engine trims one direction, - to green and + to blue it goes the other way (forgot which is winch) so it looks like one of the relays is bad.

I have looked all over and cannot find one like I have. I have looked at the parts breakdown here ( http://store.brownspoint.com/dt115/fig029-1158601.asp ) and searched for the part number specified but all I can find are relays that have two posts and the two small wires coming out, not the ones with 4 posts and two wires coming out.

Re: Tilt issue

Look at item 26 on the parts page. Problem may be up relay, all wires installed,
move switch to down position. Touch jumper wire to blue wire termial and engine ground.
Trin should go down, if so ground termial inside up relay is bad. The relay puts power to the up or down wire, then reverses the ground.

Re: Tilt issue

On the motor bracket.
They list that relay for a 1990 and up motor. It is # 26 not #25
