What is the deal with these little tilt motors? I have a 92 Johnson and the motor went out a few months after I bought it. The motor priced at $240, so I took it apart to try to rebuild it. No motor rebuilder will touch the thing! Found water had gotten in from wire penetration. Sealed it with marine silicone and replaced springs and still had some brush left so just used those. Motor lasted about 8 months before it wen out again. Took it apart this time and found it had worn the brushes all the way out. Got some starter motor brushes and grinded them down to correct size and new springs. Also found some moisture in there agin but not water like before. Sealed everything this time; screws, O-Rings, and after putting it together and mounting put a coat around the outside too.
So how long do these motors last? I'm getting tired of having to rebuild this motor every year, but if I buy a new one will it do the same thing?

Re: Tilt Motor Troubles

They should last forever. I've never had one go out.

Heat kills them. Too many people overwork them by running the engine up and down just for kicks.

Freeze,Here in MA. the local starter repair shop repairs these for me,about $60.00.

As to repeated failure, seems if you don't seal it water gets in.If you do seal it,condensation stays in
DHP
