Tilt/Trim Inoperative

I have a 1995, 115 hp Mariner Outboard motor. The Tilt Trim stopped working this weekend. With the cowling pulled, I can hear a clicking sound when I press the up/dn button but nothing else happens. Should I just replace the solenoids or is there something else I can check? Any assistance is appreciated.

First thing, make sure your battery has a full charge - I had the same trouble on my '85 150 Black Max. The power trim pump uses a lot bigger draw on the battery than the starter did. The engine would spin and start fine, but all I got was a clicking sound until I charged the battery all the way up.

I beleive the batteries (two) are fine. In fact, recently the stater would not crank becuase the batteries needed a charge however the tilt/trim still operated with the weak batteries. Thanks. Any other thoughts?

Be fore changing parts ck with a volt meter or arc across the 2 lage terminal to see if it'e the motor or solenoid

How do I do that? By two large terminals, I am assuming you mean the solenoid termianls? If I hold a volt meter across the two large terminals, what should I see? Should I be activating the up down switch? If I see twelve volts, does that mean the motor is bad? If I see 12 volts does that mean the solenoid is bad?

Also, since I have two solenoids and the unit does not operate up or down, is that a good indication that it is the motor and not the solenoids?

I know lots of questions. I do appreciate the help.

1 large terminal solenoid will have 12v (terminal to grd)all the times when activated the other will also, if it does then the motor is bad or if you arc them together the motor should run
Yes it sounds like a bad motor

Follow up for everyone.

1) Checked the solenoids with a Volt meter and they checked fine.
2) Next I tapped on the trim motor while depressing the switch and while doing this the motor began to operate. However it did not sound very healthy. At least now I know it is the motor.
3) Knowing that worst case I would be buying a replacement motor, I decide to take it apart.
4) Popped the top cover on the trim motor an noticed that the brushes were a little gunked up. Sprayed some WD-40 until the brushes would operate smoothly. Put the motor back to together now everthing works better than before.
