Re: tilt trim motor 1988 90 johnson dead

I purchased a new trim motor on ebay and that worked out fine. Before you purchase a new one check the continuity of both wires coming from the tilt motor. After messing with my old tilt motor I found that the motor worked but the green wire did not carry current( it was not tinned). You may only need to replace the wires themselves.Be certain that current is reaching the brushes and the ground. Don't know about a rebuild but a used tilt motor is not that expensive mine was about 35.00. Hope this helps, Good Luck.

If its a 2 wire motor then just connect one wire to + and the other wire to - and see if the motor works. Swap the wires to go the other way.

If you have it wired with a solenoid you can also just jump the top two large posts on the solenoid and it should go up. Make sure the 20 amp inline fuse isnt blown either, gl. Also most small motor or starter rebuild shops will be able to rebuild it for you as long as they can get their hands on the proper brushes.

I just had the exact same thing happen to my '97 Johnson. I was cruising back to the dock, and it died. I replaced both relay's and it didn't fix the problem. Then a friend of mine called me today and said he had the same problem. Said to try tapping the tilt motor with a hammer. Two taps, and it is working as well as the day I got it!!!

the guys at the starter shop told me 90% of the problem on these small motors is a breaker inside. just bypass the breaker and you are in bussiness.your inline fuse should go first

I have a 26' Campion Toba and had just replaced the tilt pump with an e-bayer pump. Worked flawlessly when I installed it and then didn't work the next day. The hammer trick worked perfectly, after about an hour of jumpering and wire jiggling. thank you to whoever mentioned it. I was quite pissed at having such a simple solution :p. This site is fantastic, my girlfriend actually found it:).

Cheers

Re: tilt trim motor 1988 90 johnson dead

I have a 99 Johnson 150 that just had this same problem. The tilt trim motor just died all of the sudden. I came home from vacation early because the boat wouldn't work. I read this thread and went out and tapped on the motor and it started working. I wish i had known that 2 days ago but the internet wouldn't work where i was at. Thanks for the help!
