Tilt & Trim Motor Bad?

The up / down button on my throttle control arm when I try to raise my outboard up / down will make a weak beep / chirp noise.

I have replaced both relay's and still the same. Is my Tilt & Trim motor bad?

Bypass the relays and try to put some power directly to the motor itself, back at the tilt/trim unit. Or, just take a basic meter and verify there's power at the motor when it's engaged.

I like the way you clarified that Will. There's been plenty of times I've wanted to use my hammer for hitting mine but it wasn't a diagnostic thing, lol.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the helpful info. Now if I check the voltage to test for current is there is a certain setting on my digital reader I need to set it to?

If I bypass the relay I can do that by giving the motor power direct from the battery?

What is considered the proper power supply to the motor given the meter results?

yes you can take the terminals loose from the relay and give it power that way if it still doesnt work after a good tap from a hammer its safe to say its trimmed its last tilt BUT ive heard you can rebuild em - ive yet to try but if the windings are still good i think you can have it done a good electrical repair shop that rebuilds starters and alternators for ALOT cheaper than than buying a new motor (probably be about 50 bux )
and 12v dc your meter may be different but i set mine to the 20vdc setting (yours may have a 30 or a 15VDC setting (mine was cheap)

Hey guys,

Found the problem!

The problem was two ground wires that are behind the relay box to the engine block. Some how the connection was loose enough causing the tilt & trim to not have proper ground.

These wires are now grounded and the tilt & trim is working. Sounds silly but always make sure your ground wires are grounded otherwise you have no power / working tilt & trim motor.

Thanks for the help team!
