Hi, I have a 1989 Yamaha 175hp outboard and the wires have been pulled out of the top of the tilt trim motor- thanks to vandals. If I remove the tilt motor, can the unit be opened up and the wires reconnected? Please advise.

Welcome to iboats. :)

You have nothing to lose by trying, but I wouldn't count on the liklihood or the reliability.

Thanks!

I guess the other alternative is to replace the tilt motor with a new one. ????

The other alterative is the most likely. They are soldered well and the contacts were likely damaged by the vandalism. Hate idiots who get there kicks by tearing up something of some one else's.

Re: Tilt/Trim Motor- Wires Pulled Out...

This weekend after having some problems removing the electrical motor (I couldn't get the motor bracket to move) I opened it up and was able to reconnect the wires. They were connected with a barrel crimp type connection. With the wires pulled out there was room enough to drive a pin down the barrel and spread it back open. This enabled the wires to fit back in, then I squeezed the barrel with a crimping tool which secured the wires. I thought about soldering the connections in addition to the crimping but realized I lent my soldering gun to a friend. After a couple of stout tuggs on the wires they held secure so I decided to skip the soldering. I have tested the unit on the bench and it checked out fine. Left to do is reinstall the motor & refill the system.
I'm feeling lucky the way this turned out so far-- hopefully it's a reliable fix.
thanks!
