I am having trouble out of the tilt trim on my 81 model Mercury 80 hp it settles after sittin a short time.....30 sec or so till it goes all the way down. If I raise it up all way sometimes it will stay any thing lower and it settles down. I've been told that this unit is Unavailable from Mercury any more and any help here would be greatly appreciated.....I've tried to clean valve assy and this was no help....all o rings look good. If I pinch either of the smaller pressure lines from outboard to pump and motor stays up.....does this rule out the cylinders.....help I'm losing precious time on the water...

Crazy

By pinching the lines does not rule out the cyld are leaking by. If the seals are leaking it needs to get back to the tank.
The weight of the motor is making this happen. See where you have a plug located on the cylinder, top or bottom. The only way to check a hyd cylinder is extend it all the way out, than remove the hose or plug on the rod side and run the pump. If a flow of oil comes out, than the seals are gone.
Do you have a adjustable valve by the pump and tank? You said it leaks down when the motor is setting. Does it leak down while you are running down the lake and have the motor trimed where you want it? Does it lose its trim setting? Give me a little mor info and maybe I can help.

Markcv

yes it loses it trim running down the lake...it went out all of a sudden think both cylinder went bad at once... it has no sign of leakage around cylinders...is there a replaceable o-ring on piston of cylinder or is this a lip seal...everyone I talked to says that service kit for pump is no longer available....think I can get orings at local rubber supplier though....if lip seals not sure....have had considerable experience with automotive and industrial Hyd. just not marine.....any help appreciated...

Stone

Any hyd shop that rebuilds cyl can usually get lip seals for any cylinders. If you have the old ones they can match them up.
Have you tested the cylinders to see if they are bad? You could have a bad main relief. Do you have that adj relief by the pump? I will look and see if I can find a web site with a brake down of your tilt and trim. Let me know about the relief and the plugs in you cylinder so you can perform a check.

Markcv

Crazy

I have looked for a web site that might give you a brake down of your system. Most of them needs you motor serial # to get stated. I feel you have a relief problem more than a cyl problem. So make sure you check those cyl first. A piece of dirt can give you lots of problems. Keep me posted

markcv
