probably not.

do you have all three rams as shown in the diagram?
If you only have two rams then you are not supposed to be able to lift engine while it is running.

If you do have three rams then it is the pump. If your engine is small, then the new valve bodies should fix you up for cheap ($150ish if you search). If your engine is 70HP or more then I can't really suggest the new ones. They are made in China and I personally do not think they will last. It sucks to lose a week of prime boating, but in long run getting yours fixed is probably a better move than new.

I am a big fan of rebuilding the rams at same time as pump on freshwater boats. It is an easy job on a freshwater boat. However, if you even have a picture of the ocean nearby then I would not try rebuilding the rams. It will usually go from bad to worse to abysmal if your boat has been near salty or brackish water.

i have a single ram and i have the same issue on my 98 force 120hp motor not lifting when running or approaching shallow waters, if i go slow enough it starts to lift. So this is normal??

it is not normal on 1998. Everything after 1995 went to single ram trim. your 1998 120hp has gotten some water in it and it has affected the pump valves.

rritt- sorry i dont mean to hijack the thread here, do i need to replace the valve body on the ram side? or will a rebuild work. It was been leaking fluid recently which explains the water intrusion. So glad i seen this.

replacement is out of question on '98 unless you can luck into a surplus. mercury is going to hit you for around $700 in parts if you have to order it from dealers.

I don't know of any easy answers. It is uncommon for '95-'99 to have trim problems but not tilt problems. I would have to open the unit up and see the innards before I could guess whats wrong.

Hi, thank you for your answers,

Yes, I have 3 rams like on the diagram. Motor is 125hp 89. like bayliner ( I think so ). Boat is on Adriatic sea, salt water. It is possible to lift motor on idle but as soon as I start forward it slowly goes down to the transom. Probably trim and lift was never rebuilt . I would like to get it in good shape. Here is a video with 4 person on boat going 30mph ( knots with GPS ) boat on plane but without using trim http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmrDovtiSeM . If the motor is working and lifting, can I exclude the motor, is this part OK ? Or is it weak

it is your vavle body. i would not mess with the rams on a salt water boat until there was no choice. it can get really ugly.

yes, that is the part. I would get yours fixed before new though. 125HP is a big engine and I have my doubts that the new ones will last more than a few years on anything bigger than 3 cylinders. The aluminum is a softer grade metal than original.

Hello RRitt,

I am having similar issues. Fresh water boat. It tilts all the way up, and slowly sinks back down. Nothing obvious leaking. I've found kits to rebuild the lifters, but nothing for the valve body, which after reading a bit seems to be where I should be focused. Most recommendations seem to be to get a professional to rebuild the valve body, but if I were going to attempt to do it myself (which I am) where would I find the parts?

Thoughts?

you can make do with a pair of briggs carberator rebuild kits and a trip to a local hydraulics shop. However, i think the briggs oring has less volume than the cup it fits into. so eventually it will squash out flat and your system will leak down again. just be super meticulous taking it apart and have your cell phone handy for 1001 pictures. work over soft surface so no parts will bounce off and don't ever force anything.

Unrelated question. What weight Gear Oil should I be using in my lower unit for an 88 force 125? How many ounces should I expect it to take?

i used atf (automatix tranny fluid), and to fill the system u might use a pint at the most. Just grab a quart and u should have plenty

Are you thinking for the hydraulic tilt / trim? The previous question was about the lower unit and I believe it will take a heavier grease (85W or 90W?). I just want to make sure I'm not missing out on something here.

atf is too thin for 2w force 1988-1992. It can cause the engine to buck when lowering.

Re: tilt trim rebuild force 125 86

I went with 80w/90, it took almost a whole qt. The nasty stuff coming out was green and blue and gross. It was well over due.

Back to trim problems. I took the boat out this weekend. Two incidents, it was like a debri field out there and we smacked a log or something. Gave the boat a good jerk. No damage to the OB or Prop. Shortly after, I gave a family a tow back to the launch. At some point in between my tilt/trim stopped working altogether. When you flip the switch it doesn't even click. No humming buzzing or anything. Would that indicate a fuse has blown? Any trouble shooting ideas?

Regards,
Adam
